Not that you asked

But my favorite ice cream is peppermint stick. Not because it's my favorite flavor (that would be strawberry, or black cherry, or maple, or marzipan) but because it's relatively rare so I feel like I have to get it when I find it.

The only kind of ice cream I don't really like is chocolate.

food, candy

Rare? Every ice cream shop near me carries it. I can think of 8 ice cream shops within 10 miles of where I live. It's one of my favorites, but not my favorite, that has to be mocha chip.

It's a New England speciality and considered "seasonal" by many outlets (only available near xmas time).

Lots of major chain ice cream places (especially outside of New england) don't ever have it.

I don't really like chocolate ice cream either. I like chocolate, the item, and I like, for example, chocolate cake and hot chocolate, but I don't like chocolate ice cream at all.

It's funny, you can express food preferences and no one really says much about it, but tell them you don't like something chocolate and they're up in arms. I like chocolate incorporated into things, like m+ms and hot cocoa, but I don't like chocolate ice cream, pudding, or cake. My feeling is that if you're going to flavor something like a bitter caffeine-rich tropical seed, why not coffee?

Speaking of fabulous coffee ice cream, you and cottonmanifesto ought to try the no-churn ice cream recipe on this page (scroll down; it's there).

We used ordinary coffee beans and kahlua, not having access to all the espresso stuff--it was super easy to make and super delicious.

(I'm repeating myself from my blog, but it's *such an awesome recipe*)

I love peppermint. Mint ice cream rocks.

Agreed about not being a big fan of chocolate ice cream. Especially the ones with gross brownie bits in it. Ew.

My favorite ice cream is no longer made. Once upon a time, a guy named Steve Herrell opened a shop in Davis Square, Somerville. He sold out his first day and had lines almost every day thereafter. He made a peppermint ice cream with pure oil of peppermint in it. Suck in your breathe and you frosted your lungs. It was brilliant, clean, white, refreshing. Want peppermint stick? He'd mix in crushed candies. Mint chocolate chip? He'd mix in chocolate pieces. Steve began the mix-in long before Cold Stone Creamery was even a flicker in anyone's synapses.

And then he sold out. Steve's Ice Cream was sold for a mere $80,000. And then sold again. And franchised. And finally died.

But back in the seventies, that peppermint ice-cream was worth waiting in line for.

I remember Herrell's in Allston!

After he sold out in 1978, he opened a new store in Northhampton called "Herrel's." Some more stores opened up, including Allston. I think they're all gone now, save the one in Northhampton.

I love peppermint stick, too. It was what I always got when we went to the local ice cream place when I was a kid.

I don't like chocolate ice cream, but I do like chocolate on or in ice cream. Like hot fudge, or mint chip.
