How do you use Userpics?

A friend of mine recently posted that she had some new Userpics. Looking them over, I realized that not one of them was a recognizable picture of her.

I then looked at mine and realized all my Userpics are pictures of me, and most of them are quite recognizable:

I don't do any blogging at present and am still unsure about the traditions of such but I think if I were to do them I would look for a theme for such pics. If it were photographs of me I would choose a range of pictures showing different expressions. Maybe a range of cartoon characters similarly expressive. Thematic images would seem most likely.
