(019) Nineteenth Report [>>Audio -> Private video]

Looks like we can rest easy again. Relatively speaking. [There's a slight heaviness to Jill's voice -- fatigue, most likely, that she's been staving off.] I hope everyone made it through all right.

[A pause, and then her tone turns thoughtful.] In these kinds of invasions, I started off thinking we literally had to kill every last thing to clear ( Read more... )

[The only movement

is the slight, slight raise of her eyebrow.

The universal sign of well?]

[May as well be some ominous Latin chanting right now.]

...what?

[Another stare.

And then she looks back to her shoulder.]

What have we learned?

I believe it's related to time. Some things have stayed dead after they've been killed in these invasions. Sometimes it's the local populace turning on us and sometimes introduced creatures. Some are hard to kill, some rely on sheer numbers. Sometimes they filter in slowly; other times a mass of them are suddenly here. There's too many variables to say that killing a certain number of them has any influence. It's always been either four days or a week.

[...at least someone pays attention.

There's a brief pause before she replies, switching it to video and now dressed.] I'm not sure if I'm surprised at a time pattern that specific, or if I should have expected as much.

Either way, I'm not sure if it being solely time limit-based would be better or worse.

There is some comfort in knowing that these things rarely last more than a week.

True. But it's also disheartening to think that no matter how hard and long you fight, it doesn't make much of a difference. [A feeling she's known well.]

These occurrences seem to end after only a few days. I've started marking my calender. [His tone is half amuse, half annoyed.] It isn't so much as killing them all, as it is to just survive until they disappear entirely. Like a game.

[A nod] That's probably the best way to think of it. It'd be nice if there was a pattern to what kind of things to expect, at least.

[How would you prepare for dinosaurs? ...strong locks and melee vests, maybe.]

Aside from what has been pointed out, I don't think there is much of a pattern. And Andraste's knickers, I better not jinx this these events do not seem to repeat themselves. [He shrugs.] I've got to give our oppressors points for creativity, I suppose. [Points. On fire. In their face.]

Creative sadism, at any rate. I'm sure there are some reckless adventurers somewhere who'd enjoy this kind of thing.

[Mitsuru has actually been wondering about this for a really long time.]

I do not believe it has anything to do with how many we kill or how many we do not kill. Rather, I believe it is simply a matter of time. There is no way to get rid of them, all we can do it wait it out.

It seems that way. The one exception I've seen was when we had to take out those plant cores to kill the rest of them, but that looks like a rare occasion.

I'm not certain if that was even completely dependent upon us taking them out.

We were not. [Making a dent in their numbers.]

I didn't think so. And considering the amount and their speed, it was impossible to tell if they were all coming from a single or multiple sources.

They were coming from multiple sources.

[A brief exhale] Of course. Just to make it all the harder, I guess.
