Perhaps you're simply negative? I've survived as an air pirate for many years. Before that, a bandit. Here I still stand, despite assassins, superhumans, magic-infused monsters, killer robots, and other troubles.

In such a situation, it's more beneficial for everyone to work together. Even a person who cares only about themselves and their own survival will find living an easier task with a group.

Poisoning food and killing off the people here will only make survival harder.

They risk the lives of others and themselves then. It would be detrimental to their own survival if they indiscriminately started offing otherwise capable people.

I'd hope they would be clever enough to avoid that.
