my two cents on torresgate...

Before you read further, keep in mind that this is a very controversial topic and that what I'm writing in this post might not necessarily be what you'd like to read. I'm pretty disappointed with the conduct and words of some people before and after the transfer was agreed on, and if you're easily offended, then you better shouldn't read the rest ( Read more... )

Well, except maybe for the Andy Carroll part (not optimistic for some reason), I couldn't agree more.
Truly, if there's one thing that makes me despise football from time to time, it's the fans. The way people behave - not just in this case - the hatred, the totally dehumanising things they allow themselves to say, it's just unbearable and utterly depressing for me.

I've been secretly following Andy Carroll at Newcastle for a while (well, not following as in watching their matches or anything, but looking him up occasionally on Wikipedia or on football websites, to see how he's doing), and I'm really looking forward to seeing him play for Liverpool. I think he's a really promising player, and considering the transfer fee, he really must be. XD

Cannot agree more. At the beginning, when I started checking out La Liga and things were still new and fresh, I didn't really hate any team. I had my preferences, but towards the rest of the teams I was indifferent at most. Now, after several years of following that league, I've come to strongly dislike certain clubs and that's mostly because of the conduct of the fans. There are exceptions, of course, but most of the time the players know how to behave, and it's the fans who don't. It's sad, but I guess that's life. The problem is that every fanbase has some idiots, no matter which club they support. *sigh*

He'd better be, otherwise we spend too much money for him! (well, imho, it's too much money, period ( ... )

It really is a lot of money, but if you consider that every English club (except for Arsenal) is looking to English-ify their squads and therefore raise the prices of English players to utterly insane levels, I guess 35 million isn't even that surprising.

LOL, I do agree with everything you wrote about hating teams, I just phrased it really badly in that comment above. (But I did use "strongly dislike" further below. XD)

The problem is that the way we perceive football (and fandom) largely depends on what kind of a person we are. And it's usually the really really questionable kind of people that tend to dismiss every opinion that doesn't correspond to their own. *sigh*

Yeah, I don't think one can hold it against him that he wants to win titles. In a way every footballer does. And if you left your childhood club for this reason, people shouldn't expect you to stay at some other club, in another country, when there are no titles to be won either.

When he retires on day, nobody will ask if he was loyal to his club and how nice it was not to leave for better ones, but people will look at the titles he won.
Well, there are some rare cases where loyalty matters more than the titles you won, but those are really rare cases, and I don't think Torres would have fit the profile anyway, considering the lack of emotional bonds with Liverpool and the fact that he's only been there for a couple of years and wasn't, for instance, home-grown.

Agreed. It seems to me people resent Torres for not being something he's never been. If they feel betrayed or cheated, it's just because they convinced themselves of something that isn't true, and in my opinion that's not his fault ( ... )

Hmm. To be honest, I've lost a lot of respect him, and I do hope he wins fuck all with them, but stooping to a level of wishing more terrible things than that on him, or burning the shirt (it's still a Liverpool shirt, and numbers can be removed!) is absolutely out of order. However, I understand why the fans are so mad, as I am utterly disappointed in him, too. Not because of him leaving at all. Or because of him wanting to leave to win things. That's okay, like you said, it's football. What pisses me, and most fans off, is the way he did it. All those declarations of hoping his kids grow up with a scouse accent, all the declarations of love for everything Liverpool FC, standing up for us, and then, when we are on the brink of finally signing a fantastic new attacker in Suarez to play off him, fucking off a few days before the window ends, to a big rival in the same league? And the interview in which he went oh, I'm finally at a big club, I'm so happy now? I don't think many fans would have begrudged him going at the start of the ( ... )

And I must add, I agree that my disappointment doesn't mean I am not grateful for his service to the club. I will always be thankful for his efforts, and the joy he brought to these seasons he stayed with us.

Oh, don't worry, I did get that! :D I think we agree on the essence of this matter anyway. And hey, I can totally understand people's disappointment - I'm disappointed, too! But those extreme reactions I don't get. At all.

I discussed the very same thing with angualupin, who is not a Liverpool fan by any means but nevertheless affected by this transfer (meaning she's incredibly annoyed with the conduct of some parts of the fandom, just as I am). We agreed that Torres probably shouldn't have said those things about wanting his kid to grow up being Scouse, or about how much he loves Liverpool and feels like home there and that there isn't a better club in the world. However, the easiest and quickest way to make your fans love you (and being loved by your fans is what you want when you're a professional footballer), is simply to say these things. Everyone does it. I wouldn't even say that they're lying, at least not at the very moment they say those things. I definitely don't think Torres was lying when he said them, but things have changed, and he's fallen out of love with Liverpool. I'm disappointed that he didn't have enough faith in us, not even when we signed Suárez, but it's his decision, and I respect it. He's done a lot for us and doesn't deserve all this ( ... )

FIRST: I need to find your transfer window icon that says "The Transfer Window Broke Up My OTP" or words to that effect. (Meaning Andy Carroll/Kevin Nolan.) Oh well. I guess I can find a new OTP. XDDDDDD.

SECOND: I read something about Liverpool and Fernando Torres that was apparently said by a man who used to drive the players and other Liverpool staffers around and this man overheard a lot of stuff in his travels. One thing that came out of it was all the crap about Torres' knee (and other injuries) and how badly he was treated by medical staff who had decided not to tell Rafa Benitez the full extent of Nando's injuries because THEY thought Rafa wanted him to play and therefore did not want to hear how bad the injuries actually were. After having this disrespect shown to him as a human being by certain club officials could have made Fernando want to leave, and I don't blame him. Never mind any other reasons...this would surely be terribly demoralizing and make him think his club was just using him as some kind of chattel ( ... )

Liverpool could have done that with Torres too, but they didn't.
The thing is he did get what he wanted and thats what's hurt the supporters aswell, young kids idolised him, they got behind him when he was down, when he was getting kicked in every game he played they sang his song, his name. They feel let down by him, I know I do/did. But as I said before no one player is bigger than our club and what's happened has and to get £50million for him after the last 18months he's had is great and the two players we brought in even better.

I just hope Andy's injury isn't too bad and he can be back at the end of the month.

I was so hoping that the same thing would happen for Torres as it happened for Tevez, but it didn't. It seems it wasn't the same situation at all. Too bad. I just think that Fernando Torres has never shown his loyalty to any club and that Chelsea is welcome to him, because now we have both LUIS SUAREZ and ANDY!!!! (Not to mention Raul Meireles, who has come on gangbusters!)

I can't wait a month to see Andy in action again, but I suppose I'll have to. *sigh*

When the story started breaking at the end of last week, I think like most LFC supporters I was shocked but was pleased when the club refused his transfer request, because at that time although Luis was joining us things could have gone wrong. So until we had signed Andy, Fer was going no-where ( ... )

Oh yes, it was pretty much like that for me. Despite Torres' recent poor form, I would have liked to hold on to him, and I was looking forward to him forming a partnership with Suárez, so I was glad to hear that Liverpool rejected the transfer request ( ... )
