... hello there!

Oct 18, 2009 19:53

I'm more or less back! Not quite recovered yet, my sinuses are still blocked, but at least I'm not feeling so weak anymore. I'll be back at work tomorrow, though I'm not looking forward to it. The weather is AWFUL at the moment. Last week it even snowed! I couldn't believe my eyes. And it's damn cold and wet, urgh. I bought two new woollen hats on ( Read more... )

Well, it's really just about the word order, so I wouldn't call it a polite term or anything, but I was quite surprised that you don't have it in your language because you have so many other expressions that sound a lot more polite than they do in other languages.

It's great to be back! *huggles*

Ahhh, Daughtry ... that whole album is the bomb!!!

As for football. Well, it was Groundhog Day for me again. The boys in blue and white disappointed me once again, and frankly, I was more than pissed off. For the first time I considered leaving the fanblock earlier, because I couldn't take it anymore. We stopped supporting at one point and yelled "WIR SIND HERTHANER UND IHR NICHT!", and I don't know why as of yet, but even our ultras, the Harlekins, stopped supporting and our capo left the chair. My guess is even they didn't feel like supporting a team anymore whose players do not identify with The Shirt and the club. It is a crying shame to witness what is going on there at the moment, and my hope ceases with every match played. *pulls hair* We have collected amazing 3 points out of nine matches, and have a goal difference of 7-23. What the fuck are we, Tasmania?? Urgh.

I can't believe I still haven't listened to it! *puts that on top of to-do-list*

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. I suppose if I were you I would laugh about the problems I have with my teams because they must seem horribly trivial. :( I never thought it would come to this with Hertha, especially not after last season! I don't understand how a team can function as it is one season and completely fail the next. I mean, what's changed? Pantelić and Voronin are gone, but they're not what I'd consider key players on the long run (though maybe Voronin could have become something like a key player if he had stayed - who knows?). And Joe S. is gone too, but I've never been a big fan of his and I refuse to believe that they're losing match after match because they don't have him anymore. If you want to rant about this, feel free to do so here. *hugs*

Sorry for the late reply - and congratulations on the draw at the weekend! I haven't seen it, but I was glad that your fears weren't confirmed and Wolfsburg didn't batter Hertha. Maybe things are finally improving now? (I'm still not quite certain if Funkel really is the best choice, though I did like him a lot when he was at Frankfurt and was sad when he left, but time will tell, I guess ( ... )

*sigh* Yes, they did. Pirès scored an early goal, then Xerez equalised, and then it was 1-1 until the 82nd minute. The subs obviously didn't help, and neither did Gonzalo. I mean, I adore the man, but this is the second time he got sent off this season (the other time was against Real, if I remember correctly), and he's not helping. :(

ah crap! (and that doesn't even start to cover it...)
I couldn't see the match since I wasn't home, right now I am glad I didn't watch it.
Garrrgh... I am too tired to even think of anything smart to say right now, except for: fuck this...

oh, and about the headers, I hate when that happens, I often check mine trice or so, esp the names. Nothing more embarrassing then to get them wrong.
But after being in the Harry Potter Fandom, I am not easily scared anymore.

I think officially we're supposed to say "my friend and I" but in practice, we really don't care. It's not something native speakers think about at all.

Germany v US women's teams should be awesome, really the best two in the world...

Ah, thanks! I was wondering because the English language usually sounds a lot more polite than, let's say, the German one, so I had assumed they had this rule as well. ;)

I'm sure it'll be awesome! A lot of tickets have been sold already, people here are very excited about the match! Our stadium will host 4 matches of the Women's World Cup in 2011, too! :)

Oh really? I've never thought that English sounded more polite, but then again, I am American. If you mostly encounter British English then I can see that. Americans, well, we're a little looser with our grammar and rules.

Yeah, I usually encounter British English - though I'm only speaking of the films I watch; when I'm on holiday, I encounter all kinds of English and usually it doesn't sound as polite as in the movies I watch. ;)

Meaning that it's impolite to say "Me and my friend", and you should say "My friend and I" instead.

The rule is exactly the same in English, only it's not considered "impolite", it's considered bad grammar. (English doesn't really have grammar rules based on politeness.) If someone mentions themselves first, they're speaking incorrectly.

That said, it's one of the many rules of English grammar that are falling by the wayside in modern speech, like the adverb.

Bad grammar? I thought both terms were grammatically correct - well, depending on the context, of course. *points down to jennis_footie's comment*

No, it really is incorrect grammar to say "me and my friend". It's "my friend and I/me", always. In jennis_footie's examples, it should be, "an accident happened to my friend and me". Taking "my friend" out of the sentence tells you whether it should be "me" (accusative/dative) or "I" (nominative), so it's "My friend and I went to the circus" (nominative) and "An accident happened to my friend and me" (dative), but in both cases you come second and whatever else in the list -- in this case your friend -- comes first.
