Oh yes - I remember the horrible dubbing from parts 1 and 2. I've been told that the dubbing wasn't all that made AWE a horrible movie, but I'm more than willing to give the English original a chance. :)
Oh yes, LotR sucked in German, too. Especially since they translated stuff they should never have translated - like "Rivendell", "the Shire" "Baggins", etc. *shakes head*
I really liked the special effects! The movie was very pleasant for the eyes and the battles were excellently choreographed. I also loved the way they portrayed the ships! So yeah, not everything is bad about AWE. But the story definitely is, and the characterizations hurt me. I'm going to watch it in English soon because I want to see how horrible the dubbing really is, but I'm inclined to believe you that it's not the only reason why I didn't like the characters. ;)
"They had Governor Swann killed. That's simply a thing you Don't Do."
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so.
As to Elizabeth - that woman has the kiss of death! I mean, seriously, every man she's kissed has been killed, even if they were subsequently brought back to life. I went in knowing they were going to kill Norrington off, I just hoped they'd have given a little more action before doing so.
I never would have expected that one could actually kill Governor Swann after all he did in the second movie. I thought that a bigger part was reserved for his character in AWE. Instead, he was killed off because he wasn't needed anymore. Things like that exceed the outer limits of my understanding

I wasn't really excited about seeing this movie, and now after reading your review, I don't think I want to bother seeing it at all.
I liked Elizabeth is the first movie, thought they did well with her character. Second movie I started getting annoyed with her. But now that you mention her character and Mary Sue in the same sentence, I think I'd probably get too annoyed with the movie if I tried watching it. And that's only with her character. Everything else sounds pretty bad as well. BAH!! Stupid Disney, ruining what should have been a good thing. :P
I didn't even like Elizabeth in the first movie, but at least, her actions and their outcome were a bit more realistic. I still can't get over the fact that they turned her into a Mary Sue. Remember, she was the Governor's daughter at the beginning. She didn't know anything about pirates - even worse, she considered them to be romantic heroes, just like most people back then who had never encountered pirates in their lives. She lived in a fancy home, had fancy dresses and was perfectly accustomed to her life. It can be safely assumed that she knows nothing at all about swordfighting or sailing. I really don't understand how in the second and third movie, she suddenly knew everything about swordfighting, sailing, and most important - pirates. And even though women weren't really that common on ships (not just pirate ships), she was made captain and when she spoke to the crew, everyone listened attentively instead of laughing at her and telling her to sod off because hey, what does a woman know about all that. That's most unrealistic.

Oohhhhh now it makes even more sense and agh holy crap I wouldn't be able to stand that. Total Mary Sue action going on. She totally went from one extreme to the other and I hate it when they do that. Maybe she was taking pirating classes all along, who knows? :P
But she was really made captain of a ship? That is just retarded, seriously. Whoever wrote the script should be fired from life. :P
