Byrnie

Today I've started making a byrnie: a celtic-style short-sleeved maille shirt. I'm using 1.1x6.7 mm (18 ga. 1/4") copper-plated steel rings, mostly because we have a crapton of them, and they're not selling at all ( Read more... )

But then you have a maille shirt smelling of ammonia instead of copper.
Doesn't sound like an improvement to me ^_^.

The ammonia washes off, of course ;)

And if you dunk it after you knitted it together, you'll even get rid of some of the marks from the pliers ?

Perhaps you should leave it on instead and put it outside for a day or two, then you'll get a green maille shirt, that *really* smells :P Perfect for an orc.

Most of what I usually make is jewelry, and I'm using the same pliers for this, so I don't really leave plier marks. The plan is to make woven patches (about 50, by my estimate), and strip each patch before putting them together with (also stripped) open rings.

This is the same way I made my previous shirt. Back then, I set myself a goal to have 3 patches done per week. In the weekends I'd put them together if I had time. This meant that during the week I'd have an attainable goal to fill, and perhaps surpass if I was feeling ambitious. During those weekends when I had time to work on it I'd see my shirt grow before my eyes. The original goal was to have it done within three months. This would have been possible, but halfway through my original deadline event was canceled (I think...I'm not sure anymore), so it sat for a couple of months before I continued at the same pace again.

Here's a fun thing: the ammonia solution turns blue when you do this :)
