I was tense with nerves. She would be here in less than five minutes. I didn’t know how strongly she still felt for Edward, how far she would go to win him…but what I did know was that I didn’t stand much of a chance in a fight with a vampire.
She came into the house, all curves, sparkling eyes and bright smiles, headed right for us like a missile of charm. “Edward,” she said immediately, “are you ready to reconsider my offer yet?”
Edward shot her a dark look. “If hell has finally frozen over, sure.”
Tanya laughed delightedly. “Ah, Edward. I’ve missed you.”

I almost laughed aloud. Edward had shown Tanya around Forks yesterday, per her demand. Their relationship was…odd, non-threatening.
“You mean he’s left me? Oh, Mike! How will I go on?”
Mike patted me on the shoulder, offering a sympathetic, hopeful smile. “I’m here if you need someone.”

This was the stupidest idea anyone had ever had in history. Some genius - meaning Emmett - had thought a baseball outing would be a great way for the in-laws to get to know one-another. Playing, not watching. We were split into uneven teams - my parents, Phil, Edward, Alice and I on one, the rest of the Cullens on the other. The numbers weren’t helping, especially since I knew nothing whatsoever about the sport.
“Bells, we’re up to bat,” Charlie told me, tugging me toward home plate. I groaned. At least in the field, I could stand out of the way.

A yapping bark sounded from the woods. This was how Seth always made his entrance, much to all the vampires’ displeasure. I laughed as he came bounding up to us, sitting in the yard, in wolf form, tongue lolling out the side of his mouth. He delivered a lick first to my face, then to Edward’s. As usual, Edward grimaced. He hated this ritual.
“You’re awfully small to be so hugely irritating,” Edward complained, wiping his cheek with his sleeve. “Don’t you know how disgusting that is?”
Seth shot Edward a look that said he could be much more disgusting if necessary. Edward wisely remained quiet after that.
