Part of the point of living outside of the Compound had been so that Serena could avoid thinking about what had happened, but the trouble was, she knew why she was out there. It made it hard not to think about all that had come to pass. No matter what she did, though, she still felt uneasy at best about the situation. At worst, she was furious. In the few days since the fight, she hadn't spoken to any of the others, except for Eric. She wasn't sure she wanted to deal with any of them except Chuck. She'd made a point of going back to her room to get her things only when she knew Blair wouldn't be there. Already it was getting tiring, but she guessed she was lucky. At least she had Beat to take her in.
Heading into the Compound, she had Christmas decorations on her mind, but all thoughts of the holiday were shaken from her when she spotted Jenny in the rec room.
If there was one thing about this whole ordeal she was clear on, it was that Jenny had played a key role, one that Serena hadn't realized before that she was capable of playing. She'd been vaguely aware of Jenny's social aspirations, but it had never occurred to her that Jenny would play it like this or that anyone would still be fighting to sort out the pecking order here of all places. Plans for decorations cleared from her head, she crossed the room to stand in front of Jenny, arms folded and brow raised, a small smile on her lips. "Jenny," she said, and for all her apparent friendliness, there was no warmth to her now. "Can I talk to you real quick? Alone."
