Huh, so pflag never meant for friends to be included, it was just to prevent outing? I never knew that. A lot of gay friends I had in the 80's only HAD friends as their family, provided how many of their birth parents rejected them. It's a far cry better now, but still a lot of work to do.

in the beginning it was formed specifically as kind of a support group for parents who loved their kids but didn't know what to do or how to react when said kids came out to them - other than to, you know, still love them - so your friends who had to make their own families because their folks had rejected them, those friends' parents weren't the target audience. i don't know if pflag at some point decided that yes, friends of queer folks were absolutely welcome, or if they're still just a parent-targeted org. you're right that things are much better now, but you're also right that we've still got a ways to go.
