Have you read the Dirk Gently books? If so, how close is it to the books?

ooo! Speaking of rural labor organizers in the 30s! I just watched In Dubious Battle. i generally really dislike James Franco, but it was good. It's on Netflix.

i've never even heard of it! i can take or leave james franco, so at least he's not a turn-off.

Boo-yah to the woman who won election in NJ! That's awesome.

I hope Dave Ermold has similar luck in his election bid.

Our election day was NULL in my state and community. Zippo. People tend to really clump their big thrusts together, for fear of low voter turnout, so at times we have something like 19 ballot initiatives in June, and absolutely nothing in November...

i love that the woman in nj basically ran because she was pissed off. spite and anger are great motivators. :D

if all the ballot initiatives are in june and there are none in november, of course there's going to be low voter turnout! that seems kind of self-defeating.

I finally realized the other day that people talking about Dirk Gently weren't just rediscovering the original series from a few years ago. It's been a pleasure to catch up on the remake. This sort of absurd magical realist stuff is totally up my alley and i really hope it gets another season. Shows like this seem to only pop up once every few years (Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Being Erica...)

Thanks for the tip on Damnation. I adored Manhattan and was hoping it would have a similar feeling. The first episode seems to be taking a lot more of a gun porn/action-oriented route than i had hoped for, but seeing it as a Justified prequel works :)

was there already a tv show? i didn't know that! i wonder how the new one stacks up. it's on its second season but i don't know if it's getting a third. i hope it does - it's weird but also really fun.

i totally wasn't expecting a potential justified crossover! but i love that it kind of works. i'm not actually sure how i feel about the show - i don't really like anyone and the two blonde women look distractingly familiar - but it's a intriguing story and i want to know what happens.

Yep, there was a BBC UK version of Dirk Gently about 5 years ago. Sadly it only lasted one season. I don't remember too much since i watched it when it aired, but i do remember it was a lot more English than the current version. I reckon it'd definitely be worth a watch if you like the new one.

I just watched the second ep of Damnation and i am still not sure about it. Clearly they are going for more of a Justified/Banshee type feeling than a Manhattan/Americans one, which is fine in the abstract, but it feels a little crass in the current real-world political climate. I'll stick with it a while, though. Not being American i have never read Grapes of Wrath or learned about any of that era of history, so this could be a good primer.
