What I just finished reading:
harpist in the wind, which on balance i think i liked slightly less than heir of sea and fire. it's really beautifully written, tho, and i enjoyed that.

What I am reading now:
the next big one, by derek des anges aka apiphile, which i am thoroughly enjoying. i read it when it was a nanonovel - every morning there was a new ( Read more... )

Woo! I'm glad you're enjoying that thing (And that it's going to kidnap your attention for ages, muahah). I'm also INTENSELY GLAD that I finally managed to browbeat Kieron into tweeting about it, even though at first glance it has done absolutely nothing for my book sales. PLEASE CONTINUE TO ENJOY MY BOOK.

i am really enjoying it! altho i loved it as a nanonovel - science aside - so this isn't exactly a surprise. i even love that it's massive! gives me a long time with ben and co. :D and i'm going to repeat this after i finish it and can give a book-i-just-finished review, but one of the things i really, really like is that there's such a sense of environment around ben. like, he's sitting in a cafe interviewing daniel (who comes across as such a dick at first, but he's so entertaining, and he does sortofkindof redeem himself, a bit) and there's the occasional aside about the weather or the other coffee drinkers or the pigeons or whatever, plus ben's fidgeting with his kapture and daniel is clearly freezing, or ben and tasneen (I LOVE HER SO MUCH) (SHE IS A NERD WITH A FRANK FRAZETTA PRINT HIJAB AND LOTR PAJAMAS UNDER HER ABAYA AND SHE OCCASIONALLY GIVES BEN DECENT ADVICE) are in the school cafeteria and you mention the drama students glaring from their end of the table, or ben is sitting elsewhere in the building and can hear ( ... )

who comes across as such a dick at first

oh that's totally deliberate - no point in having someone who gives off a great first impression. ;)

grounding things in reality is really, really important both in terms of environment/realism and pacing, tbh - a lot of that stuff is there to provide the right beats in the action and dialogue but also make sure everyone remembers where it's taking place (and the whole interconnectedness of life and what could potentially be lost in the face of an epidemic)

Hello I am here via Derek to say TASNEEN! Isn't Tasneen great? She is the best.

Isn't Ben adorable?

Also, after you've finished come and read my fanfic for it.
