STYLE! He needs a style! Duke needs a hairut!

I fully support this notion and if I had any input in the Hiddles thing, I cheer.

they both need a cut! (i hadn't realized how bad duke's s3 hair is until we were watching s1. why didn't any of the hair/makeup people chase eric balfour down with scissors before filming? they could've asked a whole bunch of people to sit on him so they could cut his hair!)

you just had to bring the hollow crown. dirty, sweaty, grimy, bloody hiddleston. *sigh*

she is in north carolina! and i hate you both! i have now hit the point where i have NO FUCKING IDEA how to write this story or even what i want to say - other than "hiddleston hot, hardy unhinged and also hot" - and i don't even know enough about the time period to fake it. nyargh. it will however get me to finally read regeneration, which is not a bad thing.

pimp to me some good source material that won't take me all month to read/watch! (but nothing that will punch me in the soul, thank you. like, i'm not going to watch the ww1 version of bent, if such a thing exists.)

For actual stuff about the front, potted bios of Sassoon and Owen are useful. There's a lot of "intro to WWI" schools stuff available online, as it is/was part of the curriculum in the UK, and there are buttloads of documentaries. I would recommend seeing if you can find the BBC4 docco about military logistics as that was generally interesting, accessible, and good for stuff about the day-to-day reality of the trenches. Also for funsies: Blackadder Goes Forth, which is half hour episodes and funny, not 100% accurate of course but good for the feel of things. Film wise I believe All Quiet On The Western Front is considered a good 'un, although most of the films/etc I know about WWI are to do with the war in the desert rather than in the trenches, which is where the absolute horrors took place. Poetry collections will also generally give you an overview, and Isaac Rosenberg and Ivor Gurney in particular were very evocative in their writing.

I don't know if most of your inspiration for the WWI would be best taken from things like movies because of the time constraints, but this period is a particular specialty of mine, and I would be happy to suggest some things to read if you think you would have the time. Also, last year I directed a production of RC Sheriff's Journey's End, the classic 1928 lookback at what it was like at the front, and I'd be glad to send you a copy of the DVD. I don't know if the tour of War Horse the play is still in Boston (my sister lives there, and saw it last week or so), but it is far, far superior to the movie, and since I saw it in London last summer I have been burbling about it to everybody. Anyway, excited to read this story when you write it.

Best,

Simon

yes! please! pimp to me some good reading material! i might end up looking for it in the library (or online, if it's online) and skimming it, but so far i don't even know where to start. i mean, "british involvement in ww1" is kind of non-specific. if you have movie recs i'll totally take those too, just because i also need to have an idea what things looked like.

i don't know if war horse the play is still here. my mom wanted to go for her birthday (which was the 13th) and then vetoed the idea because the tickets were all too expensive. i know nothing about it other than an ad i saw for it on tv, which made it look really visually interesting.
