That Bela - What A Bitch!

please note. i LIKE Bela. and while respectful discussions of why you don't are all right, the "no bashing anyone" rule is still in effect for my journal. thanks. :)

most of you know i'll read reviews but rarely comment. and i do want to say thanks to the people who do say "stop reading if you liked the episode/liked Bela/liked whatever i'm about to blast" - i do stop reading.

and there are people who i want to know what they thought of this ep. and in this particlar case, i thought of anteka - because she was there, on-set, while they were filming this one.

last January, after the CW aired ep 2x10, "Hunted," in part of my review i wote a part that i call " Storytelling 101" - trying to explain why certain plot parts are why they are, who certain characters are, and why they're there. i have a few other posts on Storytelling throughout my LJ too; i kinda like my " Storytelling 102" actually. :)

anyway.

more than a few people don't like Bela now - for stealing the Colt while Dean and Sam were kicking some dream-demon ass. and as i'd said about last week's episode, these were written as being in smack in the middle of the plot for season 3. imagine you have a 22-chapter book, and someone's in the middle of writing it, and as they're writing it, it's being pulled away for you to read it - but.. but... it's only on chapter 10!!!

here's anteka's thoughts on Bela in Chapter 10:I will say one thing about Bela taking the Colt in the end. The Winchesters are blue-collar demon hunters. They fight with rock salt and fire, sawed-off shotguns and holy water. They don't have a Magic Knife that can kill demons. They don't have an endless resource of books and spells and charms. They fight dirty, they fight hard, and they fight to win. The Colt makes it too easy. Once Ruby gave them what was apparently an endless supply of Magic Bullets, the Winchesters - as long as their aim was true - were unstoppable when it came to demons. Granted, the witches tossed Sam around a little last week, but your lower-level demon would have been no problem. You take away the Colt, you take away the easy answer. The boys need to work for it again. From a story-telling point of view, it makes perfect sense.
Storytelling. "The Colt makes it too easy." The Colt is the Magic Weapon, the Holy Grail, the Gimme - it's a plot device. but you knew this right?

think about Bela, and Ruby... and Gordon, and YED. they're all obsticles the boys have to overcome. now, think about Bela - who she is and what she does (she's a girl version of Dean-n-Sawyer in one). ok, if you're thinking about her with regards to Dean and your downstairs brain (get your mitts off my Dean! or Sam?) - and you HATE her? try your upstairs one. the one that got you through school, in school, an awesome job - the trusty sidekick geek!girl brain.

it's all storytelling; part of the overall plot that Kripke has mapped out over 22 chapters. AND - it looks this thing might not end in Chapter 12, but Chapter 15 or 17!!! yaay! more Supernatural story! i love my shiny weekly tv-novel. :)
