i think that we all tend to take the stalker thing too seriously, yet we also take the casual IM thing to casually.
i tell folks that, for me, it's like banging on my front door... you KNOW i am home, you can see the lights are on, but you don't know who i am, so why are you hitting my door? Right me a letter and lets see if i LIKE you first.

Well, perbaps this is also casual use of "stalker," too. I tend to use it to describe the whole class of behaviors where one party comes on way more strongly than the situation warrants. Happily, this person has not returned even though the block was lifted.

I like your analogy regarding banging on the door. I actually liken IM to literally walking up to someone and starting conversation. So my way of describing this dude would have been someone who got inside the personal space zone, threw his arms around me, and proclaimed "MINE! ALL MINE!" My thought process at that point is "OK, there's either going to be a punchline very soon or the Creepy Meter is about to start flashing RED." Remind you of anyone we know....? ;)

Considering how many people you and i know, i am surprised we have such a LOW creep factor in our lives.... (and hey, ya gotta im me tomorrow and remind me of this, i wanted to ask you something...about said creep).
