The whiny comment in the article linked from the second article... I'm pretty sure I saw that when it first came out, and I'm pretty sure I had the same immediate reaction then - "Wait, is that my brother?"
(In fact, no, but excepting for a few details... I mean, it's generically annoying to hear someone whine about how awful it is that people think that they're privileged in any possible way. But when it's a white boy in his thirties living as a quasi playboy musician in SF who's never supported himself ever? And likes to monologue on about how he's so accomplished and smart and better than everyone - oh, and has so much more social acumen...)
That Crommunist article is...amazing. I was just talking about that: when I came to Google I immediately signed up for the LGBTQ group (rather unfortunately called "gayglers" but w/e) and put in for the Out badge, because, you know, visibility and all. (You can get badges on your internal profile; these badges are informal and made up by other employees and represent anything from "made 100 commits to the code base" to "played in the scrabble tournament.") And someone asked me about it, and...well. My co-workers are great guys, super-smart and they like and respect me and are comfortable around me, but they struggle with the idea of straight privilege, especially the further you get away from the context of bashing or marriage
