Magic.

Setsuna didn't believe in such a thing. Sure, he had seen some amazing things in his life, a few of which had left him awed, but all of it could be explained away by saying "GN particles did it" science and rational explanation. But, when it came to what was happening to him, science hadn't been able to come up with an answer, thus far ( Read more... )

Things that are probably not helpful to dispel any rational understandings of magic: the elven wizard who wandered in not long afterwards, an entire bookcase floating behind him, from which volumes began to fly off, restacking themselves as Aibghalien scrutinized the shelves.

...

Admittedly, that was not something he saw everyday.

The elf offered a polite smile as he drew near. "Pardon me," he said, carefully directing a few floating books well around Setsuna.

Setsuna's slightly weirded out expression did not change. Though he was somewhat curious as to how he was doing that.

"...its no trouble."

Despite the fact that she was a mage, Daja had actually spent very little time in the Mystical Department. Mostly, this was because she was often busy with her forge and Engineering.

However, today she had been missing being able to develop her magical skills, and so she had decided to read up on some of the other kinds of magic present on the meatship. But when she turned a corner, she found herself nearly walking into a young man.

"Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you."

"You haven't," was his response as he briefly looked at her. The collision was avoided, so no harm, no foul, as far as he was concerned.

"I'll leave you to your reading then," Daja said, assuming that he wasn't looking for a conversation.

There was a small grunt of acknowledgment, as Setsuna wasn't the type for idle chit-chat. And even if he were they type, he'd suck at it anyway, as he has not much in the way of social skills.

After a moment, though he did glance over at Daja. "You work in the forge located in the city, correct?"

While Dhianeila herself had no tight ties to things like magic (especially since she never considered her powers magical. As well as the powers she had inherited from the Tribe of Silver before they took their leave), she did enjoy exploring. And though she couldn't physically grab ahold of and read any books when it was just her mental projection moving slowly down the an aisle of books, she did check off anything interesting in her mind to perhaps ask a friend to collect for her later.

When she spotted Setsuna, she quietly looked at the books he had collected to read through. She didn't speak just yet, since he might have been looking for something important.

He didn't see her at first, and he certainly hadn't heard her, but something caused him to lift his head from his book and look in her direction. It was like an instinct, almost. Just a gut feeling that he wasn't alone anymore.

He stared at her mental projection for a moment, not sure if he was really seeing what he thought he was seeing. What was going on here?

She smiled, wanting to ease the confusion Setsuna felt.

"Hello. I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Oh, she was disturbing him, but on a different level than what she likely meant. Still, the disconnect between his emotions and his facial expression (or lack there of) was impressive. He continued to stare at her.

"Who are you?" What are you? He wondered.

Hayate missed having a cushy desk job, sometimes. Whatever, she wasn't volunteering because it was fun, but because someone had to do it sometimes, leaving her, today, in the position of organizing books on the upper shelves.

It was a task well suited to her, since she could fly, hover. She moved through the air like a helicopter with better handling or turn radious, and without noise of any sort, besides her humming (which given as much as Setsuna about magic could be an integral component of her flight).

Four or five books in her arms, she was now almost directly above Setsuna.

The humming got his attention first. He glanced up to see what was making that noise, and was surprised to see, of all things, a girl floating overhead.

That was... weird. Maybe she had some kind of micro anti-grav device on her?

He watched her carefully for the moment. Not that he thought she was going to attack him, but it was still a relatively small girl holding a pile of books over his head.

Being used to this, she wore shorts under her skirt sometimes. Today was one of the days she did, so there wasn't much of a show. Suddenly, "Achoo!" She jolted in the air as she sneezed, books going up for a split second, then tumbling down! "Watch out!"

The next instant, as the books tumbled, Hayate's necklack glowed, humming a mechanical tone, putting a pale white glowing, mostly transparent dome around Setsuna, whose fast reflexes might have worked against his favor here if he went dodge, because that dome was very, very solid.

He actually wasn't looking there anyway, beyond a casual glance to see if she had a thigh holster of some kind. But he was still looking up, so he did notice when the books began to fall.

He tried to duck out of the way, only to crash right into the dome she put up. If he had possessed a sense of humor, he might have found the whole thing comical. Instead, he grabbed his shoulder and glared up at Hayate. What kind of person gives another a warning to move, just to put up a wall in their path?

"That was unnecessary."
