Magic.

Setsuna didn't believe in such a thing. Sure, he had seen some amazing things in his life, a few of which had left him awed, but all of it could be explained away by saying "GN particles did it" science and rational explanation. But, when it came to what was happening to him, science hadn't been able to come up with an answer, thus far ( Read more... )

Things that are probably not helpful to dispel any rational understandings of magic: the elven wizard who wandered in not long afterwards, an entire bookcase floating behind him, from which volumes began to fly off, restacking themselves as Aibghalien scrutinized the shelves.

...

Admittedly, that was not something he saw everyday.

The elf offered a polite smile as he drew near. "Pardon me," he said, carefully directing a few floating books well around Setsuna.

Setsuna's slightly weirded out expression did not change. Though he was somewhat curious as to how he was doing that.

"...its no trouble."

"Go find the third volume in this series," Aibghalien murmured to absolutely nothing. He then passed the book he'd indicated off to nothing. Said nothing apparently consulted the book, then carried it off around a shelf.

It's possible the elf is crazy, but that's one very active delusion.

"Who were you talking to?" Because Setsuna was fairly certain the instructions weren't directed at himself, but its not like there was anyone else there. At least none that he could see.

"An invisible servant." Aibghalien considered his statement, then sheepishly smiled. "That's the name of the construct, not a tautology, I mean."

.....okay. That made not a lick of sense, but he's not one to judge.

"Of course."

"It's a very basic magical construct that can do simply tasks and minor lifting," Aibghalien explained. He certainly didn't find it special; he could summon one just on force of will alone.

He will simply liken that to some kind of droid with optical camouflage, and move on from there.

"...why make it invisible?" If you wanted it to spy on something, fine, but otherwise it seemed rather inconvenient.

"It doesn't really have solid form, it's actually an expression of force," Aibghalien explained. "Giving it a form or the illusion of a form would actually be a greater expenditure of energy."

"I see." Well, not really. But the guy had floating books following him around, so Setsuna wasn't going to question it much. "But you're aware of where it is at all times?"

"Yes. It can't go far and it's very limited in what it can do, but it's ideal for hauling around books like this."

As proof, a book drifted in Aibghalien's direction as he finished the sentence.
