Magic.

Setsuna didn't believe in such a thing. Sure, he had seen some amazing things in his life, a few of which had left him awed, but all of it could be explained away by saying "GN particles did it" science and rational explanation. But, when it came to what was happening to him, science hadn't been able to come up with an answer, thus far ( Read more... )

While Dhianeila herself had no tight ties to things like magic (especially since she never considered her powers magical. As well as the powers she had inherited from the Tribe of Silver before they took their leave), she did enjoy exploring. And though she couldn't physically grab ahold of and read any books when it was just her mental projection moving slowly down the an aisle of books, she did check off anything interesting in her mind to perhaps ask a friend to collect for her later.

When she spotted Setsuna, she quietly looked at the books he had collected to read through. She didn't speak just yet, since he might have been looking for something important.

He didn't see her at first, and he certainly hadn't heard her, but something caused him to lift his head from his book and look in her direction. It was like an instinct, almost. Just a gut feeling that he wasn't alone anymore.

He stared at her mental projection for a moment, not sure if he was really seeing what he thought he was seeing. What was going on here?

She smiled, wanting to ease the confusion Setsuna felt.

"Hello. I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Oh, she was disturbing him, but on a different level than what she likely meant. Still, the disconnect between his emotions and his facial expression (or lack there of) was impressive. He continued to stare at her.

"Who are you?" What are you? He wondered.

"My name is Dhianeila," she replied, voice soft and quiet. "Dhianeila Y Leisha Altoria Ol Yunos." And with that, she bowed slightly in Setsuna's direction.

"I apologize if I've disrupted your concentration."

...

...

"...are you a ghost?" It sounded like the most absurd question he had ever asked in his life, but... well... a floating transparent person in front of his eyes? Either she was dead, or he was hallucinating. Possibly both.

She shook her head with a small laugh. "No, I'm not a ghost. This is just a projection. It's ... how I get around, here."

"Oh." That seemed... weird. "You're not a hologram, though," he noted. It was that vague sense of awareness that was gnawing at him, no hologram could give that off. But he wasn't sure how he could be so aware of her to begin with.

Deciding to investigate further, he approached her. It really took all of his willpower to not poke her ethereal form when he was close enough.

"How are you doing this?"

"With my mind ... it's an ability I posses. Am I right in thinking that it's not something you're very familiar with, in your own world?"

He hesitated a moment before answering her. Could he do something like that?

...would he even want to?

"...you would be right, yes."

"I hope I didn't startle you with it."

Tilting her head to the side slightly, she smiled at him. "What are you reading?"

"A book." Setsuna F. Seiei, Captain Obvious.

"Why are you doing... this? Is there something wrong with your body?" The projection of her looked to be in good physical health. For a ghost-like thing.

"Not exactly," she began to explain, "but I can feel the thoughts and emotions of others. Both myself and those around me can become overwhelmed if we are too close to each other."

He frowned slightly at that thought. That seemed a rather sad fate. "I see."

"It's not so bad," she continued, feeling his slight change in emotion. "It is an ability that is of great use to both myself and those who rely on me."

Giving that perspective some consideration, he concluded that, yes, it could be useful. Which made him wonder...

"Have you had a chance to sense anything of the Ohm?"
