Mission 01 - Recovery: Group 2

May 18, 2009 23:53

Picard, McCoy, Middle Man, Wendy Watson, Jean, Spock, and Tobias all set off in another direction. Trees and rocks battled for supremacy in this direction, they would have to walk carefully so as not to sprain any ankles. The terrain was of the rather rocky scrub-filled variety.

Tobias morphs again to Hork-Bajir for the transit. He can't carry the communicator in hawk form, and he doesn't want to leave it behind for one reason: He doesn't need it to talk to the others, but they can't reply in thought-speech. At least he got the bonus of the morph being made for climbing and rough terrain. He knows he might need to change morphs again when they arrive though, it all depends what kind of work he has to do.

At this point Picard didn't even feign surprise. "This is rather like when I hiked out in Death Valley during my time in the Academy," he mused, holding out his tricorder to try and get a reading on the pod.

"Excpet here you're far more likely to get attacked by something big, unrecognizable, and probably nasty."

Wednesday's 'voice' comes over the comm rings.

«Be careful, everyone. The tracks I'm seeing suggest much larger creatures than I'd normally expect in this terrain. Certainly not normal wildlife.»

There's a hum in the air. Something is approaching them. Something...odd. Over the rocks, away from them, shadows move across the ground as something floats closer and closer over the rocks.

They're dehydrated. This isn't their native habitat. They've already hunted their fill of the local wildlife, and they need open areas to fly--they can't survive in the forests.

The Middleman activates the Middlegun, looking around warily.

"You guys hear that?"

"Indeed," Spock replies, "I am picking up lifeforms. I cannot ascertain exactly how many, which suggests that there are many."

< I hear. Kinda wish I didn't if there are a lot of them. > Tobias realized that he might not have his wings at the moment, but he still had a morph made for tree climbing. He latched on and let the Hork-Bajir do its thing, moving upward, cautious not to get past the point the trees could support him. As he did, he continuned his forward movement through the branches so as to keep up, his serpentlike neck stretching to see and hear better.

*boy I'd love to borrow one of the Visser's big scary things about now* he thought. *Or a dracon beam* *Or at least my teammates* He could only hope this team worked well enough to get them through.

As they walk, the ground gets more and more unsteady somehow--and that's when they might start to realize it's acutually shaking with minute traces of seismic activity.

Wow, what could that mean? Are they on a fault or something?

"Oh, that's great," Wendy says as she keeps on walking. "Either we're on a fault line or something, or there's a giant prancing around here somewhere." She turns to look at some of her group. "I'm kinda betting on the first here, but I wouldn't be surprised about the latter." Maybe it's a giant jellyfish?

Jean's lips turn down in another frown - she's been doing that a lot lately and maybe it should start bothering her soon.

She quickly does a mental scan of the area before once again carefully making her way forward. "I don't sense any other life forms in the immediate area...."

"I'm not sure what's going on here, but it's obvious that Stacy did not provide us with near enough information on our targets. I want everyone who can to remain in the air, and if possible, ready to assist those of us on the ground. We still have some ground to cover before we reach that pod."

Once they were up on higher ground, they would find themselves facing a massive river of lava. Stretching across it a large bridge that appears to reach the other side. However, while the lava flows well below the bridge, it still emits a large amount of steam and heat.

Any living thing that attempts to cross the bridge will likely be baked alive. Yet, their assigned pod lies on the other side of this molten river.

"Well this is certainly a humdinger of a pickle."

"Anyone else expecting Callisto and Velasca to come bursting out of that thing?" Wendy asks, looking around. "No? Right. Okay. So..." she looks at Jean, "betcha wish Iceman was here right about now. Or, you know, Nightcrawler." Because teleportation or freezing the whole thing? It would totally make life easier.

Standing off to the right of the bridge, they might notice a console. If someone were to investigate it, they might discover that it is the control panel for the bridge's thermal shields. There isn't much power left in the console. Perhaps only just enough for someone skilled with computers to figure out how to reactivate the thermal shielding around the bridge.
