Mission 01 - Recovery: Group 2

May 18, 2009 23:53

Picard, McCoy, Middle Man, Wendy Watson, Jean, Spock, and Tobias all set off in another direction. Trees and rocks battled for supremacy in this direction, they would have to walk carefully so as not to sprain any ankles. The terrain was of the rather rocky scrub-filled variety.

There's a hum in the air. Something is approaching them. Something...odd. Over the rocks, away from them, shadows move across the ground as something floats closer and closer over the rocks.

They're dehydrated. This isn't their native habitat. They've already hunted their fill of the local wildlife, and they need open areas to fly--they can't survive in the forests.

The Middleman activates the Middlegun, looking around warily.

"You guys hear that?"

"Indeed," Spock replies, "I am picking up lifeforms. I cannot ascertain exactly how many, which suggests that there are many."

< I hear. Kinda wish I didn't if there are a lot of them. > Tobias realized that he might not have his wings at the moment, but he still had a morph made for tree climbing. He latched on and let the Hork-Bajir do its thing, moving upward, cautious not to get past the point the trees could support him. As he did, he continuned his forward movement through the branches so as to keep up, his serpentlike neck stretching to see and hear better.

*boy I'd love to borrow one of the Visser's big scary things about now* he thought. *Or a dracon beam* *Or at least my teammates* He could only hope this team worked well enough to get them through.

Like a large wave cresting over a series of rocks, a massive flock of what appeared to be giant jellyfish descended over the hill moving directly for the team. As the gaggle of strange flying creatures drew closer, the wind began to pick up in a series of sharp gusts caused by the rapid flapping of rudder-like fins on the jellyfish which seemed to help them "steer."

Thirsty. Thirsty. Need Fluids. Must Have Fluids.

Before the team had a chance to fully assess the situation, the giant flying jellyfish were swarming all over them.

If they're anything like Earth jellyfish, I'd watch out for the tentacles.

Tobias shimmied back down from the tree. The creatures looked like one of the Visser's wierd morphs and he half expected to hear his arrogant thought-speech any time now from one of them. He lashed out with his arm blades and his tail, sending as many tentacles flying as he could. But the hork-bajir, for all its blades and its size, was proving too slow and hard to maneuver. The tentacles kept smacking him and it hurt. Tobias wanted something that could move quickly, something that was more agile.

He stumbled off and demorphed, then remorphed, hoping he wouldn't have to keep doing it because it was taking a lot out of him. His body grew larger and an extra pair of legs came in. His wings formed into small but useful arms, and he felt eyestalks sprout on his head, then go live.

< Next time I'm bringing a dracon beam with me. > he commented. Now, he could slash out with his tail blade while moving quickly, swiftly on hooved legs. It was true he could have sliced and diced more with the hork-bajir, at leats he could play a game of ( ... )

The fact that giant flying jellyfish were attacking her team really should have disturbed Jean, but for some strange reason.... She wasn't all that surprised. Not really anyway.

What she was though was annoyed. Highly so. The fact that the tentacles were swaying and swiping at her and her team - and occassionally making their targets was beginning to irk her a lot.

Besides, being slapped by a giant tentacle was not pleasant!!

She found herself automatically ducking another swinging tentacle and once she was clear of it she stood. Without a thought she narrowed her eyes and waved her hands out before her, telepathically sending the several flying jellyfish who were hovering before her scattering out of her view.

"Now this is going to get old fast."

"Agreed." The Middleman replied, firing at the jellyfish.

Spock, for not too young a man, is surprisingly limber when he has to be. He's already on the move before each phaser shot finds its mark, keeping to the most sheltered position.

"I suggest we lead them into the woodlands," he lets off another beam, "We may be able to snare their tendrils amongst the thicket."

< Got it. I'll do what I do best. > Tobias says as his tail blade sticks into a blob of jellyfish body and tears a hole. He barely avoids getting slimed. He is glad to demorph back to his own form for a while. He takes to the air and circles the blobs, climbing high and then streaking downward with a hawk cry. < Hey, you big goo bags! Come and get me! >

He doesn't know if the metal bird is nearby or not, but this is where he's most comfortable as he heads toward the trees.

Picard fired his own phaser on a wide stream, following the reast of his team. "Good thinking, Mister Spock, but if they're what they seem to be, then it's logical to assume they're mainly liquid. If you can, set your phasers to a wide-burst band. Low setting. Dehydrate them and warn them off. We're not here to potentially wipe out an ecosystem."

Jean's scattering and then Tobias' efforts to herd them has helped get them all grouped together, too...

Jean's eyes narrow in concentration as she continues to telepathically push throw the giant jellyfish away from her crewmates and herself.

It's also obvious that she's getting a bit frustrated and a few times she accidentally smashes a few of them together.

"How many more of these things are there?!"

Spock may or may not be wishing phasers really did have a 'sudden interest in botany setting' right about now. Since that is not currently an option, he complies with the Captain's order and switches to a wider stream. It's already on stun, natch.

It zaps them all, and dehydrates them and sure enough, they start to putter unsteadily away, leaving them alone.

They thought the group was easy prey.

They thought wrong.

Wendy swings her gun around her finger. "It's like House of the Dead. With flying jellyfish." She looks around. "Is everyone okay?" For her part, Wendy is completely unfazed.
