LHC fun!

So it looks like they are firing up the LHC in Sep and expecting their first mass collision in Oct. What a delight! :D Despite the relative saftey of the experiment, the world is braced on the edge of it's seat to see if we are all plucked from our existance and stretched out endlessly untill our mass fits on the eye of a pin... Yeah right, like ( Read more... )

What would be said is not "I told you so", it would be "what is done is done".

The goal is to avoid the need to say anything.

Abstract below from Dr. Rossler's plea to the world, copy available at LHCFacts.org

"A nightmarish situation, that can still be hoped to be averted in time through communication within the scientific community, is drawn attention to. Only a few weeks remain to find out whether the danger is real or nothing but a mirage. After this time window is closed, it will take years until we know whether or not we are doomed. The story line has all the features of a best-selling novel. The reader is asked to contribute constructively."

Quote from Dr. Otto E. Rossler, Professor Theoretical Biochemist, visiting Professor of Theoretical Physics, inventor of the Rossler Attractor, founder of Endophysics, winner of the 2003 Chaos Award of the University of Liege and the 2003 Rene Descartes Award.

There's been a good lot of testing done, and even an injuction brought before the American courts to try and stop it based on these fears... The fact is, at this stage, you could run over to the LHC crew waving a picture taken from a mini LHC you made in your basement that shows your cat being compressed by the gravity you've created and satalite photos of your city block being swallowed into something too dark to show up on camera, and they'd prolly say: "Well, thanks for that, here's some free tickets to the launch". ;)

It's a good environment with a lot of study done into it, and so far the only real answers have been that it seems safe enough, but let's fire it up and find out, and frankly, nothing screams "Science" to me more then pressing the record button on your camera, hitting the start button on a multi-million dollar machine, and crossing your fingers that you were right all along.

It's gonna be fun! :D
