Artist Statement, Invisible Red Thread of Luck

Apr 06, 2009 21:25

For better or worse, in less than twenty-four hours I will either be an official MFA candidate at NMSU, or in a great deal of trouble. Not that the two are of necessity mutually exclusive. But certainly I'd prefer to be at least the former.

Below the cut is my artist statement, a new piece, and a picture of a several week old kitten. Because I know my audience. )

thesis, cats, screenprinting, grad school

Love the artist statement. One of the few I've ever read that is entertaining to read yet sincintly conveys the intent and focus of the work. Good luck today. No matter what happens remember we love you (and your art).

The artist statement sounds really good, and, just as importantly, I love your project. I would totally buy that book and I'm sure there are loads of others who would too.

Break a leg! And I completely understand the nervousness -- I've got a pile of in-progress forms for what my department calls Confirmation of Status, where they make sure you're still on track for a doctorate. ::shudder::

Today I found out that accompanying my new status is (drumroll) a new pile of forms to fill out! So I can graduate eventually!

Now if I could just get the stupid transfer credit sorted...

It does seem that every time one achieves a new status, all one gets is a large pile of forms...

The statement is perfect, very well written. You'll be fine today. And as for the kitten - KAWAII!

I leave you with lyrics from the Scrubs musical:
You're going to be ok
(That's what's going to happen)
You're going to be ok...
Plan for tomorrow
Because I'm telling you
You're going to be ok

The new print is awesome and I want one of your run for my own. I don't have money for art-buying at the moment, but set one aside and I'll buy it from you (no really) once my student loans for next semester come through. I think it's awesome.

I also really like your artist's statement - you should maybe check out One! Hundred! Demons! by Lynda Barry, because someone might mention it and it's awesome.

I especially am interested in your discussion of false-reality and the documentary/archivistic nature of your proposed book - the authenticity leant to your creatures by their ties to the "real" can be fun to play with especially if you're using images that appear "real". You could do some fun plays with tangibility/texture and your cut-outs along those lines - making a physically 'real' model of a creature which may or may not be real out of a print, etc etc.

I'm diggin' it :D

One of my committee members (my awesome WS prof) actually brought One!Hundred!Demons! to candidacy so I could borrow it. She also loaned me Beasts! book one
