I grabbed a Halloween cup with a built-in silly straw from the clean-dishes strainer today, filled it with cranberry juice, and sucked up three decent chunks of mildew that had collected near the base of the straw.

Something similar happened to me when I was a kid - I drank from a silly straw had old Pepsi settled in the bottoms of the loops. It tasted absolutely foul.

I got a novelty straw when I was a kid. It was red, and made sort of like a crazy straw. It had a heart toward the top and the frog with the top hat from the Looney Toons, I think it was, idk. I used it for YEARS!! I was in fourth grade so I was...nine-ish when I got it. When I was fifteen, Mom noticed the black buildup in it. I hadn't used it for probably a year by that point. I had noticed when I tried the last few times, that the flow wasn't as easy to work with. She took a pipe cleaner and attacked it. I had been drinking out of mildew for quite a while...I miss that straw, though. She mutilated it when she tried to clean it. :(

Straw things are so fun, though!! I wish they were a bit easier to get into to clean, though. Those cups with the attached straws are the best, even if they are for kids!

Honestly, I might not have noticed the mildew if the chunks hadn't broken off and come up the straw. The cup was one of those opaque cock-tail types with Halloween stripes from CVS, so the bottom of that straw could have turned entirely black and I'd not have guessed. But that flavor... cannot untaste!
