So, I randomly had a terribly awkward question pop into my head that I feel like I can't ask the people around me for fear of reactions ( Read more... )

I've wondered the same. I'm guessing its because the body has some kind of immunity to its own bacteria, so it ends up being ok.

No, because if you have a perforated bowel you develop sepsis. Trust me on this one.

Perforated, I can see, because then feces is coming in contact with areas that it usually does not come in contact with.

Yeah, you are right.

Avec, you can also become septic from ruptured hemorrhoids.. no one is "immune!" So ignore all these people and what they are saying about being immune to your 'normal' flora. Seriously.

I'm going to take a stab at it, but if I'm wrong, anyone else who comments is more than welcome to correct me!

I'm guess it's because the bacteria that ends up in our own feces comes from our own stomach and intestines and therefore, part of our normal flora. It's something our own body is already used to and considers part of us. We can't really be infected by something that's a part of us, so when the fecal matter is exiting, that's all it does, is exit. It doesn't really have the power to infect us.

I have always wondered this, too! I mean, I guess in addition to being our own flora, it's also in a mucus membrane, which tend to have pretty high white blood cell count? Could absolutely be talking out of my ass, though.

Also, why the hell didn't we have a tag for 'hemorrhoids'? Modfail.

Will remember now. x3

Oh no that wasn't a reminder, haha. We didn't even have a tag relevant to this post, so ain't no thang.

Damnit I want some serious SCIENCE™ up in this post because I'm not really sure I am brave enough to google the answer to your question :(

Bodies are definitely not immune to their own fecal matter. If you get a perforated bowel or something and feces gets outside your intestines, it's bad news in terms of infection. Our body is only designed to handle feces in specific areas.

I'm guessing people just have to clean themselves really well. :/
