I felt like a total llama when I had to turn to Wired to figure out how to manage my music collection the way I want, a shame that is only slightly mitigated by the fact that they scooped /. too.

So now I use iTunes to rip and burn music, winamp to listen to it, mlipod to manage the music on my iPod, hymn to strip out the DRM, imToo to convert ( Read more... )

fuzzy llama, funny llama, llama llama duck...

oh, and i have a question, oh tech guru of mine. i have a friend who bought an ipod mini, but can't make it work on her computer bc she has winME. so, i was wondering if perhaps this new winamp plug in would solve her problem? what do you think? currently she's using a friend's computer to hold her itunes, but that's obviously not ideal.

the software that comes with the ipod, is that just itunes, or is there other driver-ey type stuff that she would need besides itunes? she can't load anything bc of her operating system, and that's teh suckage.

according to lore, mlipod can circumvent the need for apple software for moving music to and from teh pod. Teh pod should be able to play it correctly too. The only problem I can forsee is the inability to get software updates for teh pod itself. You may be able to download and install those seperately. All in all though, it's not really that important; teh pod is pretty much good right out of the box. The only thing that is going to suck is that without iTunes, you can't buy music from teh apple store.

What you're friend should really do is trash WinMe and install a real operating system. Like Linux.

i would agree, but this is alisha's sister rachel, and she's like 11 or 12, and not too computer savvy. currently alisha has it installed on her computer, itunes and all, but rachel would like to have it on her comuter to play with it. so, yeah. linux is not really an option. :)

well installing Linux would be a perfect way for her to GET computer savvy, dammit! Honestly, it's not really all that much more difficult to get Linux running than to install WinAmp and mlipod, but... whatevs. Another option would be to use Alisha's windows install disc to install a better version of windows on Rachel's machine. That's kind of a lot of work though, and they could run into problems with automatic update using the same key.
