I love my Canon SD600! :) I researched it a lot before picking it up. I use it mainly as social toy and to take pictures of flipcharts from offsites. It's probably less useful for art projects.
my canon digital elph is wonderful, and it has a macro setting for close up tiny things. i have had an issue with the lcd viewfinder, so be sure to get the extended warranty. well, that's my advice for *any* camera. extended warranties are good.
No personal preferences, but for shooting anything really small, go with something that has a macro setting. It won't really help on the "drunken candids" side, but it won't hurt to have it when you need to get down to small details.
I like my canon SD400, it's not made anymore, but the SD450 is the never version with bigger screen and more features. It's small enough for a pocket, has reasonably good glass and a pretty ok sensor for a point and shoot.
Really though for what you're doing, I'd splurge on something that you can put a real macro lens on. The Digital Rebels are decent, about 2x what you were wanting to spend. Add the f/1.8 50mm and a good light source and you'd be golden.
