The port section of ancient Athens was called Piraeus. At my alma mater,  St. John's College (Annapolis), we all studied ancient Greek, and we called the dock area of Annapolis the Piraeus.

Now the mail brings a flyer from the old place announcing, if you please, PIREAUS SEMINARS, with a quote from Plato on the front.

I was going to kvetch to Wendy Knight, the author of an article in today's (Friday's) NY Times about the following sentence:

"Mr. Hall said that extra-virgin olive oil is evaluated in three steps - with the nose, palette and throat. "
