I was going to kvetch to Wendy Knight, the author of an article in today's (Friday's) NY Times about the following sentence:

"Mr. Hall said that extra-virgin olive oil is evaluated in three steps - with the nose, palette and throat. "

So I got onto the Times website and ran a search for "olive oil palette" and found the article on the first hit ("On Read more... )

I rather prefer the first, it conjures up a rather interesting image (painting the nose and throat of an extra virgin Olive Oyl). My complaint is rather about the term "extra-virgin", is this 'extra' in the sense of 'more than usual' (how can one be more than usually virgin, isn't it a binary state?) or in the sense of 'outside' (as in 'extra-terrestrial')?
