As they reached the door, Sarah heard footsteps on the stairs, and someone shouted, "Freeze!"

"Drop your weapons," the guard said. Slowly, Sarah lowered her gun to the floor, and as she straightened up, she inconspicuously slid a knife out of her boot. The guard nodded to the gun. "Kick it over here."
Instead of doing as he said, Sarah launched the knife at him. "Move!" she shouted at Teppic. The knife buried itself in the guard's throat, and, flailing, he fired his gun at the ceiling before he fell, clutching his throat. Sarah snatched her gun off the floor and got out of the way as fast as she could, in case the other guard tried to shoot her.

As fast as she could, she swung her gun around and fired off a shot, hoping to hit the guard despite not having had a chance to aim properly.

She stepped through the door, and was greeted by something she really hadn't expected: a puppy. It was sitting on the floor, looking up at her sadly. "Okay, that's not what's supposed to be in here."

As for the second question, she got the same paycheck every couple weeks, she didn't get paid per job. But since this was a black-ops mission, she couldn't exactly explain that she was a government employee that the CIA occasionally sent to off people. "You think rigging one tripwire qualifies you for a share of the profits?"
