With what felt like everyone gone and out in that engagement - the drafted Outworlders, the Outworlder Jedi, even a big chunk of the local Jedi - Coruscant seemed different. Outside of the Outworlder apartments it was just as crowded as ever, just as busy, but it seemed like a lot of the people left behind were just... waiting. Even his local friends had relatives in the Republic military.

Inside the Outworlder apartments it was practically empty. Hardly anyone eighteen years old or older was left, and even some of the few who were younger than that had gone off. Luke had started not spending any more time in there than was necessary. More and more of his time was spent at the range, practicing with his laser rifle and looking for the peace that sometimes came to him during a long session of challenging targets ( ... )

If there was one thing Padmé hated, it was war, especially one that she could do nothing about. She was facing the same situation in her own time, and she wondered - no, feared - that it would become like this with the somber air permeating everything. The feeling clung all around her after Anakin's departure, and with nothing to do to occupy her time she was left hoping for his safe return and some time with her future son ( ... )

He saw her on the bench and approached hesitantly.

People from other planets were crazy; did she not feel how cold it was, even in the sun and with the park walls cutting the wind? But Luke had been here long enough that exposed skin had stopped immediately making him worry about sunsburn and wind scarring, at least. Better not to say anything. Luckily he'd managed to focus on her face by the time she saw him.

The Senator was only a little bit taller than him; he'd grown a few centimeters while on Coruscant. Delicate-faced, as he'd seen on his Starkpad, and neatly groomed with arranged long hair; he suddenly thought that she looked very unlike his Aunt Beru, and Luke had to clamp down on a wash of homesickness before it could show. He wouldn't think about that, especially not now.

Luke wished Leia was here. She'd know how to do this.

"Hello," he said awkwardly, putting his hands behind his back respectfully, the way his aunt and uncle had taught him.

"Hello," she gave him a warm smile. "I'm glad you came."

She'd been just a little worried that he wouldn't. She couldn't blame Luke for not wanting to be around her or Anakin considering they had never been there for him before, no matter the circumstances surrounding such a decision. He didn't owe them anything; they owed it to him to be there for him when they could.

"Space is a cold place, isn't it?" It'd been a long time since she'd met Anakin, but she had some success with him when she'd spoken about the same topic. "It'll take some getting used to."
