Inside the Outworlder apartments it was practically empty. Hardly anyone eighteen years old or older was left, and even some of the few who were younger than that had gone off. Luke had started not spending any more time in there than was necessary. More and more of his time was spent at the range, practicing with his laser rifle and looking for the peace that sometimes came to him during a long session of challenging targets ( ... )

People from other planets were crazy; did she not feel how cold it was, even in the sun and with the park walls cutting the wind? But Luke had been here long enough that exposed skin had stopped immediately making him worry about sunsburn and wind scarring, at least. Better not to say anything. Luckily he'd managed to focus on her face by the time she saw him.
The Senator was only a little bit taller than him; he'd grown a few centimeters while on Coruscant. Delicate-faced, as he'd seen on his Starkpad, and neatly groomed with arranged long hair; he suddenly thought that she looked very unlike his Aunt Beru, and Luke had to clamp down on a wash of homesickness before it could show. He wouldn't think about that, especially not now.
Luke wished Leia was here. She'd know how to do this.
"Hello," he said awkwardly, putting his hands behind his back respectfully, the way his aunt and uncle had taught him.

She'd been just a little worried that he wouldn't. She couldn't blame Luke for not wanting to be around her or Anakin considering they had never been there for him before, no matter the circumstances surrounding such a decision. He didn't owe them anything; they owed it to him to be there for him when they could.
"Space is a cold place, isn't it?" It'd been a long time since she'd met Anakin, but she had some success with him when she'd spoken about the same topic. "It'll take some getting used to."

He should've asked River what you did when meeting a pretty stranger who was your mother, he thought ruefully. "You're... settling in, I guess? It's weird without everyone here."

She could tell he was uncomfortable, but she kept trying to find a way to loosen him up. "I've been finding my way around and getting used to everything. I do miss having Anakin and Obi-Wan here, but they'll come back," she said, sure of her words. She had to believe them. "Would you like to sit? If you're still cold, I have this."
Briefly she turned to gather her blue cloak so she could offer it to him.

Mention of his father made him blink. Yeah... that. Even now, he didn't know what he wanted to do there. What he really wanted was to keep believing in at least part of what his aunt and uncle always said, that Anakin had died far from home.
So Luke nodded and settled on the bench, with a little distance between them. His hands were lost in his sleeves. "No... no, that's okay, I'm good. So... so, tell me about Naboo."

Fate. Luke had grown to dread that word, or anyway the meaning attached to it. Fate, destiny, spoilers... However it was phrased. He shook his head. "Yeah, you met my aunt. She said something about that once... She likes Tatooine, though. I know she'd hate being here."
The ache was building up in his legs. Luke shifted his weight, then pulled his legs up to cross them before him on the bench. That helped for a moment, but he could feel it starting again from nothing, like a reset timer.

When she realized she'd said something wrong it was already too late, and she looked down. She was used to dealing with people every day, and conversing with them easily, but there was so much riding on this one conversation. River had told her she would make mistakes, so she tried not to dwell on that one.
"That's true," she agreed. "She'd probably never choose to leave Tatooine."
Noting his discomfort, after a moment she stood. "Would you like to take a walk? I'll answer any questions you can, about anything. Anakin, Shmi, Naboo--just say the word. I don't mind listening either."

He stood a moment after she did, rocking in place a few times from heels to toes. "That'd be good. If you want to, I mean." He picked up her blue cloak and held it out to her, stretched out between both hands, casting about for something to say. He'd told Anakin he'd think about things to ask, a few days ago, but... he hadn't. Not really.
"Do you shoot?"

He seemed so anxious still, but she took the cloak with a smile. "Thank you," she said as she wrapped it over her shoulders. She'd mess with tying it later; she wanted to get him moving in the hope that it would help ease his fidgeting.
"I learned to use blasters when I became queen," she answered. "I'm a decent shot, though I know a lot of people who are better."

When she didn't immediately start going, he took the lead, aimlessly meandering from one side of the tiled path to the other.
"I'm a great shot. I hardly ever miss." Luke reached back over his shoulder and tapped the rifle in its case on his back. "My uncle started teaching me when I was seven, the same age he started to learn. I like shooting. Not killing-" he hastened to say "-I mean, I've shot scores of womp rats and some feral anooba, a bladeback boar once, that kind of thing. Predatory animals that wanted to go after me or other people. And yeah, it's kind of satisfying sometimes. But the killing's... not really what I like about it."
This was the most he'd said to her face to face. Suddenly conscious of that, he went silent again.
