Rikku's Birthday [Closed to Winding Way]

Even though Aniki was gone, Rikku was still excited about her birthday. It wasn't every day you turned 18, after all. And when Sophie suggested a party, the blonde was all for it.

L was not sure he was entirely 'invited' to the party, but it seemed to be a ship-wide event, so he decided to try a little more of the 'mingling'. He hadn't had much warning about the impending birthday, so he was left with nothing that would reasonably constitute a present and had to settle for dipping in to his own personal supply of candy - which he had generously taken about a pound out of - to serve as a present.

"Happy Birthday." He handed over the bag to Rikku a few moments after entering.

He hoped there was cake.

Rikku grinned when Ryuzaki entered. "Oh, lemme guess. Candy?" She peeked into the bag. "Yep! Sweet, now I'll be on a sugar rush from candy and cheesecake!" And probably a bit drunk.

"Speaking of cheesecake, Giselle should be down soon with it."

L's ears perked up at the promise of cheesecake, coming was an excellent idea.

"I'll just attend your party now, then." L gave Rikku one of his weird smiles and shuffled off towards the drinks table, unaware that most of the offerings were alcoholic.

"It's mostly booze!" called the blonde in warning.

When Ness heard that Rikku's birthday was coming soon, he scrambled to find her a gift, finally settling on a cute doll that he saw in the town market. It was a little expensive, but it was something he was sure she'd like.

So, with the doll in one arm and his cat in the other, (he figured Turtle would like a playmate) he made his way to the engine room.

"Rikku! Rikku! Happy Birthday!" He smiled, holding out an arm to present her with her gift. Unfortunately, it was the wrong arm, so he quickly pulled back his cat (who protested with a mewl) and held out the correct item.

Candy bag still in hand, Rikku turned around when Ness arrived, laughing when he accidently held out Fobbie and squealing when he held out the doll.

"Awww, it's adorable!" She hugged Ness, cat, and doll tightly before taking the present. "You can stick your cat over there, in the Kitty Pen." Rikku gestured to a pen where she'd already stuck Turtle and Peanut. "We've got to do something about all these kitties..."

"I've got a friend who seems interested in one of them," Ness said as he plopped Fobbie down in the pen. The little furball immediately went to go play with Turtle and Peanut. "But, I kind of get the feeling we'll always be looking for homes for cats."

"Really? I've got a friend on the Victoria II who wants one," commented Rikku, hugging the plush bird to her chest. "But yeah. We should sell some at shows for extra money."

It had taken a little creative sewing, but Sophie had finished the hat in time and thought, in her professional and humble opinion, that it looked simply smashing. She just wouldn't mention that mice had brought her most of the felt from Giselle. That was a little odd.

She'd put it in a hat box, but hadn't wrapped it. Stepping into the engine room, she held out the box to Rikku. In her pocket was a collection of various bobby pins, hat pins, clips and other assorted thing one might need to get a hat to stay put. "Happy birthday, Rikku!"

There was a newly cleared off table for presents, high enough to keep any escaped cats away from the gifts. That's where Rikku was when Sophie approached her.

"Oh, bet I know what this is!" The blonde eagerly opened the hat box. "Oh, wow. Sophie, I love it!" Lifting the hat out of the package, Rikku tried to get it to sit on her pile of braids. "Uh, little help?"

Sophie smiled at Rikku's attempts to make it sit right. "Here," she said, pulling a few of the pins from her apron.

Deftly she pinned the hat securely into Rikku's hair, piling one or two more braids in to make it look right. Stepping back, she adjusted the veiling just a little so it sat jauntily over of hair instead of in her eyes. "What do you think?"

Rikku pulled out a mirror, glad she kept that little bag on her belt. "I love it! And it even matches what I'm wearing!" It did. The blue and green hat went almost perfectly with the blue vest and green skirt she had on.

Rhyme had finally located the kitten she had picked out, still unnamed. He was red and a little fluffy and sitting quite contentedly in her hands. She was drawn in by the sounds of a lot of people milling and congregating a corridor or so down, so, kitten in hand, she headed off to investigate.

"Oh ..." She said as soon as she stepped into the room. "It's a party."

She scratched her kitten between the ears before deciding she probably should leave, since she wasn't invited.

"Hey! Can I help ya?"

Rikku had spotted the girl soon after she walked in, and she looked lost. Plus, she had one of the kittens. Maybe she was Ness' friend...

"Hi! I'm Rhyme. I really just came to pick up a kitten." She held him up by way of explanation. "I didn't mean to intrude."

Rhyme looked around, she saw Ness, maybe it wouldn't hurt to say hello to a few people.

Rhyme? Was she Beat's sister? Rikku would have to remember to ask later.

"Oh, you must be Ness' friend, right? I'm Rikku!"

Hachibei had heard about the little celebration from the journals. He wasn't really invited nor did he really mingle much with the members of the crew. Then again, he was not much of a party boy and happened to be on the ship that loves it. Still, with his latest masterpiece finally done and the party being a little more mild - a birthday party was different from any other type, he assumed - he figured now was the best time he actually start to get to know the people he had been traveling with.

With a new sketchbook under his arm and a few pencils in his pockets, he figured the best type of gift was the type you make yourself.

"Happy Birthday, Miss Rikku!" He greeted cheerily. "I hope I didn't miss the party just yet!"

Rikku grinned as the artist approached her. "Nope! Fun's just getting started!" she informed him. "I haven't seen you around lately. Busy working on a new piece?"

"I just finished, actually!" Hachibei announced. "I'm really proud of it! Though, I still have plenty more to improve. I could show all of you later if you'd like but first -"

Hachibei took the sketchbook out and opened to its first, clean page. He then took a pencil from one of his pockets and placed his hands ready to sketch. "-it's time for me to give you your present. Will you will still for a bit?"

Grinning, Rikku sat down in one of the chairs. She was going to get drawn! "Anything I need to do, pose or something?"
