Tohru knew there was going to be more booze than food, there always was...so she'd made enough sandwiches and nibbles for the whole crew, as well as the big dish of pasta salad Rikku had asked for.
It took her several trips to cart everything down to the engine room, especially with Dandelion tangling around her ankles the whole time. She'd nearly tripped several times, and had actually scattered some bits of cheese and salad on the corridor floor by the time she thought to pick the kitten up and make him sit in her apron pocket.
He squirmed in a tickly sort of way, but at least she wasn't falling over.

She pushed open the engine room door, carrying a plate of sandwiches, and set them down on one of the tables Rikku had set up, before looking vaguely around the room, as if not quite sure what to do next.

"Hey, the food's here!" Rikku called, joining Tohru at the table. "Thanks again, Tohru. And, uh. D'you wanna put Dandelion in the Kitty Pen?" She gestured to said Pen.

"Kitty Pen? If he'll stay in there, that would be great!" Tohru extracted the kitten from her pocket with some difficulty and a slight ripping noise - he'd dug his claws into the fabric of her apron, form the sounds of things.
"I don't think he wants to..."

She deposited the cat in the pen with a admonitonary finger-wave. "You stay there and be good, okay?"

Then she turned back to Rikku, fishing a small tissue-wrapped package of candies out of her pocket. She looked at its ripped wrapping in some dismay. "I'm afraid Dandy's got at it a bit, I hope you don't mind...happy birthday!"

"Ooh! More candy! Goodie!" Rikku added Tohru's candy to the bag Ryuzaki had given her. "At this rate I'll end up on a sugar high and drunk by midnight....dunno if that's a good thing, heh." She laughed at the wrapping attacked by Dandy. "Oh, it's fine. Turtle's kidnapped some of my ribbons."

THE CAKE HAS ARRIVED! happylittlesong August 15 2008, 02:03:44 UTC
Giselle was in a tizzy. A good sort of tizzy! She just loved birthdays, and she was terribly excited to be a part of Riku's super-secret birthday present. Whatever happened, she must not let Rikku leave!

It was just as well she was bringing the cake, then. It took her a few minutes to figure out how to get it down -- she'd really outside herself on it; it was huge, and she wasn't sure she'd be able to carry it by itself. Finally she ended up cutting it in half and stacking them -- Rikku would end up with a double-tiered cheesecake, but she was sure she wouldn't mind.

She enlisted a group of mice to help with the plates, although they'd just reached the hallway leading to the engine room when they took off, squeaking in terror from the scent of the cats. Giselle frowned (in as much as she was capable of frowning, anyway; it came out more as a pout) and leaned against the wall, trying to support the cake and the plates and the utensils and...oh dear ( ... )

The second Rikku heard Giselle, she'd bolted to help the cook. It was cheesecake. You do not let cheesecake fall.

"Need help?" she asked, grinning.

"If you could just take the plates, dear, and the forks --" Giselle beamed at her and hefted the cake, which was almost as tall as she was. (Granted, she wasn't very tall. But it was still a very substantial cake.) "I think I can handle this, then! Is there a place for it in there?"

Rikku scooped up the untensils and dishes. "Yep, there's a table set up for food. Tohru already brought down food that isn't loaded with cream cheese," she explained. "And we needed a table for all the drinks."

By the time Riku had finally reached the party, it was clearly in full swing.
Good, he thought, I guess I didn't need to ask Giselle to distract Rikku after all...

Slipping over to the birthday girl, he smiled brightly.
"Happy birthday."
He offered her first a chaste kiss on the cheek (Since they were in the middle of everyone... He didn't want to have an intimate gesture disrupted by the others, L in particular.)

"Riku!" The blonde wrapped her arms around her boyfriend. "I was wondering where you were!"

"Heh. I was just.. around, you know." Riku replied with a sneaky grin. "How has your birthday been so far?"

"So far? It's been great. Ryuzaki and Tohru got me candy, Ness got me this adorable little stuffed bird, Hachibei drew me a picture and offered to draw one of the two of us, and Giselle brought down the cake," Rikku explained, oblivious to Riku's sneaky grin. "I, uh, had some of the candy and a few glasses of wine, can'tcha tell?" She giggled.

"Hey, he comes to me no matter what I call him. He's perfectly happy with the name." He wrapped his booze-free arm about her shoulders lightly. "Besides, no one else is going to name their cat that."

Rikku rolled her eyes. "No one'd name their cat Deeohgee or even Felix," she muttered.

A few minutes passed before Rikku spoke again, surprisingly serious. "Hey, Riku, you think we'll always be like this?"

"A little." He replied softly. "But each day, we'll be a little more, a little different, too. We're going to change, be different people, but..." He smiled warmly and pulled her shoulder tight, "we'll always be happy together."

"D'you think we'd ever get married?" Rikku asked, nestling closer.
