This was incredibly depressing. They'd tried so hard and...they'd failed.

Penelo wasn't one to drink, but there was a bottle of wine that she wanted to try, and it really seemed like there was no better time than right now to try it.

Beat slipped in behind her (or slipped as much as he could, he was never quiet) and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"...yo"

"Hm?" Penelo turned and, realizing it was Beat, wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her head in his stomach. "We failed," she murmured, trying not to cry.

Those words shook Beat right into his spine. Sure, he had thought the same thing. Had screamed about it in his room. But hearing the ever hopeful Penelo say that... made it all the more real. Maybe even more real then seeing that hunk of land fall.

All he could do was pet her head and wrench his own eyes closed. He was never good with this kind of thing

Hisoka entered the messhall quietly. He was on the Convoy (along with Souji) at Captain Reynolds' request, to get a first-hand look at the disaster area.

The Nihl River rescue mission was less than twenty-four hours in his past, and he still had that stern-faced, bright-eyed look a fight tended to give him. And then there had been the astonishing experience of standing on the broken edge of the post-cloudquake continent, where, in the dark hours of the early morning, a couple of billion tons of rock and dirt had slid into the vast, cloudy void beneath Reial.

He poured himself a glass of sake, and looked around.

That weird long-haired first mate with the eyepatch had been on to something, Ichigo thought. He sure as hell didn't feel like celebrating a romantic holiday, but taking the edge off of everything that happened for an evening? He could do that.

As he walked into the mess hall, Ichigo wasn't really looking around. If there was anybody there he knew, he figured they'd approach him. But as he crossed to the drinks-table, he couldn't help but notice a familiar face -- a face that didn't belong to the crew of the Convoy.

"Hisoka?!" he said, visibly surprised to see the other. "What're you doing here? I thought you were still with Serenity!"

"I am," said Hisoka, "Captain Reynolds just asked Souji and me to take a look at what's happened here. How are you, Ichigo?"

"Souji? You mean Souji Seta? Man, it's a whole freaking parade of familiar faces." As for Hisoka's question...Ichigo rubbed at the back of his neck. "I'm okay. I mean, as okay as I can be, considering what happened. Better off than some people right now, anyway."

It was still hard to believe a part of the continent and everyone on it was gone. Looking at it hadn't helped it sink in.

It was a somber party. Crewmembers sitting, drinking, talking, but with none of the usual raucous noise. It felt almost like a wake, or funeral reception.

Erza was no different. A chunk of the continent was just gone, because they hadn't stopped it in time. She was drinking, but she wasn't feeling it.

It was a wake, as far as Pfirsich was concerned, and he intended to drown his sorrows as much as he could. He could take a lot, and give it back again, but something of this magnitude disturbed him to a level that he couldn't fully comprehend. He hadn't slept for a day or so now, and it showed in the dark circles under his eyes and his stooped posture.

Grabbing a bottle from the table in the mess hall without looking at the label, he then headed for the nearest seat. "Can I sit with you?" he asked in a monotone.

She nodded quickly but silently. "Go ahead," she said. "I think we all need a bit of company right now.

Kurumi was already into the alcohol. She'd helped to set it all out on the tables first and promptly begun to drink some whatever-it-was from a dark bottle to the right of her. From the faces she was making, she certainly didn't like the beverage in question, but she wasn't backing down from it, either.

What else was there to do?

Justin wanted nothing more, right now, than to stop thinking about the sight from the deck. He wasn't sure why he'd even gone up there to look - except that he couldn't not. He doubted not seeing it would have helped. Not really. He'd still know what happened, and he'd still need to stop thinking about it.

That, at least, was something he had a lot of practice at. There wasn't enough work to bury himself in, but alcohol would do just as well. He sat down heavily in a free chair, threw an automatic "Do you mind?" toward Kurumi, and poured himself a full glass of whatever it was she was having without waiting for a response. Judging by her expression, there was enough alcohol in it to get him drunk.

"Hm." Kurumi shrugged and kept drinking, grimace or not.

Permission enough, not that he'd really expected otherwise.

Justin finished half of his glass in one go, without even making a face. He was more used to drinking to forget his problems than was good for him.

Talking wasn't exactly on the top of his list of priorities, either. Hopefully once he was drunk it would become easier - possible - to talk about something besides the recent disaster. Hopefully.

Joshua, too, had gotten into the alcohol; a full glass of gin and tonic on the table by his right hand. He sat a little away from everyone else, seemingly lost in thought, but was still quite aware of his surroundings.

After seeing the disaster so close at hand, Souji had gotten into the booze pretty quickly. He wasn't drunk by far, but he was grateful for the slight swimming in his head.

...something about the young man at the table alone was familiar. "Mind company?"

Joshua gave the stranger a sidelong look. Must be one of the two from Serenity, but which one? Joshua didn't have much to go on, and he was always willing to meet new people. He gestured to the seat across from him. "Go right ahead."

Leaning an elbow on the table, Joshua gave the other man a grin before he continued, "I'm curious. What brings a man like yourself to my little space in the mess?"

As Joshua leaned forward, Souji leaned back, hands dangling between his knees and posture all calm relaxation. "I'm not sure. Is this table any different from any others?"
