...something about the young man at the table alone was familiar. "Mind company?"

Leaning an elbow on the table, Joshua gave the other man a grin before he continued, "I'm curious. What brings a man like yourself to my little space in the mess?"

"Of course it is ♪~" he said slyly. "It's the table where my wonderful self can be found." His grin grew a little wider. "Ah, but my company is only as interesting as the person who keeps it."
Reply
"Though I guess this is the day for meeting interesting people."

Setting it back down again, Joshua continued, "When part of the world suddenly disappears, people start thinking, 'what if that had been us? What if the person I just met yesterday had been there?'" Joshua levelled a calm stare as his drinking partner. "Is it easier when you lose a person you barely know?"
Reply
Finally: "Yes and no, I think. No one wants to lose someone they're close to, of course. But..." he paused, gathering his thoughts. "...but a stranger or a simple acquaintance is easier to project onto. Like you said 'What if that had been me, what if that had been my family'. People can imagine things much worse then reality."
Reply
"Ah, but it seems reality is catching up with imagination. A cataclysm such as today's had been unheard of. Some might start believing it's the beginning of the end of the world." Joshua curled his right hand loosely by his cheek, his left hand easily resting half curled on the table. "It's a scary thought, don't you think? That everything could end soon."

He paused again, taking a long swallow of his drink and hissing at the taste. "But there's really no point to pondering something like that until it happens, then deal with it however you can. People are remarkably skilled at recovering, I've found" He tapped his glass again, looking pensive and a little hallow eyed.

Instead he turned the smile into a smirk and commented, "Not a regular drinker, I take it?"
Reply
"No, not really. That obvious?"

Joshua took a drink from his glass before setting it back down and leaning forward on the table. Given their conversation progression, Joshua guessed this stranger wasn't Hisoka Kurosaki (that last name had sent an involuntary shiver down his spine when he'd read it); the syntax in the way he spoke was vastly different from the text Joshua had read.
Still, nevertheless, it was a guess, albeit an educated one.
"You know, Souji," he said, slowly swirling his glass and listening to the movement of the ice within it, "I'm not much of a drinker either."
Reply
"Still. It's a good day to start. Though I have to admit it's off putting when you don't know the name of the person who knows you."
Reply
He continued, answering Souji's implied question, "Yoshiya Kiryu, but Joshua will do."
Reply
"And it's nice to meet you, Joshua." he raised his glass in a half toast rather then offering to shake hands.
