Watanuki was finally getting over the trauma of that damned network post himself. This had involved a lot of hiding in the galley and not talking to people and staying the hell off the network; but finally, things seemed to be dying down, to the point that he wasn't in a terrible mood while he worked ( ... )

Watanuki was listening. He really was. But a good deal of this rare glimpse into Ichigo's character went clear over his head with one sentence.

"Wait-- you're into Jean?" he demanded. He hadn't expected that! Sure, Ichigo was about the worst person for expressing emotion he'd ever met, and there was no reason to expect him to tell him about his love life anyway, but there'd been no sign--! Not the slightest indication!

"What?! No! I'm just saying, if I was going to fall for anybody, it'd be someone like Jean!" Jean was in the same mental category as Utena and Rukia -- they were friends and comrades in arms, people he'd trust to have his back. But he wasn't romantically interested. Ichigo just didn't think of them like that. They were more like guy friends than anything else. "That doesn't mean I'm into her!"

"Then you need to be more specific!" Watanuki cried. "I just got done telling you about Himawari-chan and you started talking about Jean! What was I supposed to think!?" He crossed his arms and glared sidelong at Ichigo. "So if it's not Jean... then who is it?"

"There's nobody," Ichigo said. "I'm not interested in...anyone."

He felt a flush rise in his face, and glanced off to the side. Jeez, this was an awkward topic. He probably shouldn't have brought it up.

"Man, I never imagined you had a mushy side," he griped, changing the subject. "You sound like my old man."

"It's not mushy," Watanuki informed him with an air of vast superiority. "It's love. I wouldn't expect you to understand about that, though." He paused. "...And I'm not acting like him! You don't see me spouting it all over the network, do you?!"

It was as though someone had let the air out of him. Watanuki drooped against the counter, his face the picture of woe. "I. I don't know. I mean, she never really said anything. Whenever we were together, Doumeki was always there. I could never ask her about it." He scowled. "He might have been preventing a love confession! For five years!"

"Wait a second, five years?" One eyebrow arched skyward in disbelief. "Dude, if you've been friends for five years and she still hasn't said anything, I'm pretty sure that means you're out of luck."

Ichigo felt bad for Watanuki, in a way. It sounded pretty damn unrequited to him, but Watanuki obviously felt really strongly. Somehow, Ichigo doubted that he could convince the cook to move on. And really...maybe feelings like that only did come along once.

He reached over and clapped Watanuki on the shoulder, once, twice. "Well, if that's really what it is, like I could tell you to give up on that," Ichigo said, closing his eyes. "You'll get her one day." He blinked, glancing over to look at Watanuki properly. "If she's that important to you, what the hell are you doing here? At least write to her or something. She probably thinks you've forgotten all about her."

"I have written!" Watanuki cried, not even seeming to care about Ichigo's invading his personal space in his distress. "I mean, we do exchange letters sometimes. And Lunasa gifts. Friendly ones. I couldn't just forget her." He shrugged. "It doesn't mean much, though, because I always send things to Yuuko and Doumeki at the same time."

He looked at Ichigo in suspicion and vague disbelief. "...I never thought you were the type to give love advice."

Ichigo turned a baleful eye on Watanuki. "I'm not. I'm shit at this sort of thing. You probably shouldn't listen to a word I say." He waved a hand carelessly.

"It's not like you've ever had a girlfriend," Watanuki agreed. "Unless something happened on your other ship you didn't tell me about." It occurred to him that for all he knew, Ichigo had had plenty of trysts on his pirate ship, or on the ship he'd run to the year before. Maybe he was equipped to talk about this, whatever he said.

...That train of thought, however, was stopping right there, because thinking about Ichigo's love life was probably asking for mental trauma.

"Nah. I had other stuff to worry about." Dating was low enough on Ichigo's list of priorities as it was. Dealing with a Hollow in your head? Not exactly conducive to dalliances with crewmates.

"Besides, basically all the girls I got to know were pretty scary." Jenka and Hiyori were the first two to come to mind, and both had fangs. No, thanks. ...Yoko and Anthy had been okay, but Anthy was spoken for and Yoko'd disappeared. And it wasn't like he'd been looking to start a relationship with anyone. Ichigo really didn't think about that sort of thing.

"You? Scared of girls?" Watanuki couldn't help but scoff at that. Sure, having a Hollow in one's head was not conducive to holding down a relationship, but fighting off a hideous beast out to take over one's body and steal the souls of everyone he held dear had to be a little more frightening than the prospect of asking a girl back to the cabin every so often.

....Not that Watanuki had ever done this, or had any desire to. But he could imagine so, anyway.
