The man froze and slowly turned around. His squinted eyes widened and he stared at Gintoki...only to clasp his hands together as he gasped over the goose.

"You fooound it!" he cooed. Caulcher beamed at him and asked, "Oh, how can I ever repay you, Mister...?"

Caulcher looked a bit confused at Gintoki's words. He certainly wasn't expecting to be asked for strawberry milk and pudding as a reward! "Are you sure about that, Mr. Sakata?" he asked. "Wouldn't that much milk and pudding go bad?"

Corridor leading to such a major area as the engine room XD destnys_overr8d September 23 2010, 04:56:26 UTC
Being a supernatural hunter of supernatural monsters, one develops an ear for things that go bump in the night. Even if what that thing is turns out to be less than supernatural.

Still, Hellboy didn't take chances. Well, okay, yes, he did - he was notorious for it - but not in cases like this. The demi-human was as used to operating at night as he was during the day. His body had never heard of circadian rhythms, apparently. Thus it was he was still in the engine room that night when he thought he heard someone approaching. Stealthily. Which meant they probably realized they weren't supposed to be down here. Moving with a stealth of his own that one might not expect from someone of his great size, Hellboy put down his tools and prowled out of the engine room into the corridor beyond ( ... )

Caulcher jumped back with a small yelp and stared at him with a mix of fear and wide-eyed surprise. It didn't take long for him to compose himself, though, and he coughed into one hand before he cleared his throat.

"Oh, my sincerest apologies, sir." He clasped his hands together, and said, "You see, I...well, surely you've heard about the missing items by now?"

Hellboy didn't budge, nor did his expression change. "I've heard. I heard a gold, animated goose found its way into one of the quartermaster's closets, I heard some of the cooks and a handful of others beat the crap out of some mysterious egg-beater babies in the kitchen, and just now, I heard a guest on this fair ship slinking around in the middle of the night into places he really shouldn't be."

His tone is level and even, almost conversational . . . but it's clear that, whatever story this joker's trying to tell, he's not buying it. He knows the captain and others on the ship have secrets to hide, and this guy right now is REEKING of creating distractions so he can poke his nose where it doesn't belong.

"You mind telling me what's really up with these missing items, and what exactly it is that they do?"

"Oh, if you want an explanation, that's easy," he said, surprisingly unperturbed by Hellboy's thinly veiled accusation. "You see, they-"

He stopped midsentence and blinked in confusion. "Pardon me, but did you say...egg-beater babies?"

AFTER THE SHENANIGANS WITH THE EGG BEATERS... let's go with the cargo hold gypsymothdance September 23 2010, 15:32:56 UTC
The search had not been going very well. Of course, the goose had turned up right away, but there hadn't been a word about the candelabra, and the only egg beaters that had turned up were ordinary and completely harmless. And most of them had now been smashed to scrap metal, despite that ( ... )

CARGO HOLD IT IS tidesnpc September 23 2010, 16:14:30 UTC
It was only Jean and the cargo. Welp, it was time to get cracki-wait, what was that? Somewhere, behind one of the many boxes and crates, there was the sound of wood scratching against wood and the echo of a soft, solid thud. Whatever could that be?

Jean held the lantern high and approached the source of the noise, trying to get a good look at it. "Is someone there?"

It had better be someone and not something. The last thing they needed was a monster stowing away on the ship.

"Yeep!

A man stumbled back from the crate and the lantern's light revealed that it was none other than Mr. Caulcher. However, he himself didn't have a lantern on his person or any other source of light. How odd. He shielded his eyes and squinted, before he said, "Oh, yes! Terribly sorry, but...my, you're part of the crew, aren't you?"

The bridge son_of_time September 24 2010, 08:38:46 UTC
Sam had holed up in a corner of the bridge with a book (on the history of the language spoken in an obscure village in the Badlands for the interested). The only light in the room was from a pale ball that he had summoned. He had figured if he wanted to get away from work he would get it from somewhere other than his room, where everyone knew where he was.

The moment he heard shuffling noises he extinguished the light and sat there quietly in the darkness. It wouldn't do for the others to learn he had magical abilities and find out he was in here if they wanted something fixed.

There was something shuffling, all right, and that something was Mr. Caulcher, and he wasn't doing a very good job of it. He was bumping into things left and right.

"Ouch! Oh, ow, that hurts!" he whimpered, having bumped into yet another piece of equipment. "Where is the light? I knew I should have brought a lantern with me..."

So it was that guest of theirs, what was the name again?

His lips curled into a rather devilish grin, guests shouldn't be wandering around the ship late at night by themselves, they might find something they'd all rather keep quiet. Sam silently got up and headed towards the noise, intending on giving their guest a good scare.

He whined something under his breath before he shook his head and continued on. While he was far from the epitome of grace he had yet to bump into anything else; perhaps his eyes had begun to adjust to the light. Either way, he was unaware of Sam's presence. What a fantastic target!

Up on deck pink_is_best September 24 2010, 11:03:23 UTC
Nena was taking a break from her search, as it happened. She'd spent most of the day looking for the missing items (when she wasn't on any of her shifts or napping, of course) and was just a little tired of it. A passenger's missing stuff was a part of work and work was Serious Business. But that didn't mean she had to enjoy it, right? That was her line of thinking, at least.

She'd helped find the gilded goose at least, even if the other two items hadn't turned up yet. It had looked like they'd found the self-perpetuating egg beater as well, but... mistakes had been made. And so now she was up on deck, enjoying the breeze while she thought of where to look next.

It had been a long, long day.

For what seemed to be the millionth time to him, Pip had to wonder once more just was up with life nowadays. As if things weren't bad enough, now the ship was partway to chaos because Mr. Caulcher had lost his things and now everyone was scrambling to find it. At least that whole thing about the breeding egg beaters was over and done with - the man had no idea where anyone would even get an idea, but well... when one had been though things like he did, you just learned that it was really for the best to not ask questions.

Not zat its going to really help anyone for zat matter, the man thought to himself with a stifled sigh, blowing out a cloud of cigarette smoke that swiftly wafted past him from the air current up on deck. It was a good night - not too many clouds, and the temperature was just cold enough without having to feel his fingers freezing off anytime soon. Still, he had his gloves on, just in case ( ... )

Nena and Pip weren't the only ones near the deck. Their strange guest slouched against the rails and took a deep breath. He didn't seem to be aware of anyone else yet.

Pip may have been quiet, but Nena's ears were sensitive. She picked up on the footsteps headed towards her and turned in their direction. Oh, it was Pip. Nena gave him a small nod before turning back to face the sky again.

"It's a nice night, isn't it."

It was more statement than question.
