One good thing about the damn mirror visor--no one could see Reno's shocked expression.

What kind of race was this, seriously? Hopefully medics would be on hand, since he knew people were gonna crash.

Reno, as Eyeshield 21, refueled his plane (with fuel carried from the ship by the cabin boys/girls--no sabotage here, thanks), before hopping in the cockpit, ready.

Oddly, this sort of race brought back a whole lot of memories. He was admittedly more used to an urban setting (read: flying through Kropmark-Nahk) with bullets whizzing past and people randomly dropping down on your wings or cockpit from the taller buildings), but perhaps that could be something of an advantage as well.

One last cigarette, and Hibari was off, oblivious to the noise and energy around him. All that mattered was his plane, and that strange, light feeling that he got every time he thought about this whole event.

Flying for one's self was, after all, the best kind of thrill.

Ichigo pulled his helmet on and climbed up onto the runner, blood pounding in his ears. His face was calm, but the adrenaline was already running high. He'd done everything possible to get ready for this. His plane was in top condition. He'd had plenty of time to get used to handling it with the upgrades, and besides, Ichigo picked up new things really fast.

This course was no problem for him. He did hope that anyone not up to this had the sense to drop out of the race.

Ichigo climbed into his cockpit, snapping the buckles into place, and easing his engine on. Obediently, it purred to life; a change from the loud rumble and roar he was used to. He rested a hand on the side of the plane for a moment, then turned his eyes on the racecourse in front of him, waiting for the signal to start....

BANG! went the gunshot.

Tensa Zangetsu leapt forward, quick as thought, and soared into the air.

It was a shame that she wasn't going to be flying against her REAL target in this round, but Kara figured that there could be other, better opportunities. As such, the blond pilot was in high spirits, taking a swig from her canister before hopping into her cockpit.

"LET'S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD, BITCHES!"

And if anyone tuned into her frequency as soon as the planes were up in the air, they would have heard her very long and loud whoop across the airwaves.

Everything was about to start. Sara had never raced before, but she'd put in a lot of effort into her training (and, thanks to Tear's insistence, also gotten some much-needed sleep), and she'd always been a good pilot. If she didn't at least make it to the finals, she'd never live it down... especially after Gin had put the pressure on.

"Honestly."

Besides, she had Emily strapped into the plane with her. Nothing could go wrong.

Falco didn't particularly care which race he had ended up in. What really mattered was that he made it to the final. He would never be able to live with himself if he failed at this. After a preflight inspection, the Sky Claw was cleared to go. With a wish of good luck from his pet, he was ready to take to the skies.

"Piece of cake," he told to himself as the planes lifted off.

Millie had meant to watch all the races, but she'd gotten distracted by a message from HQ, and missed the first one.

Oh well, that just meant she had plenty of time for the second race! Millie sat on the bleachers, Meg in her sling on her lap, both ready for the race to start.

Shit shit shit shit shit.

Had that idiot really entered the races? No way. He couldn't have. Arthur ran through the crowd, getting up as close as he could to see spectacle, Kiku bounding behind him and doing a great job of keeping up. His eyes scanned the planes until, at last, he caught sight of the red, white, and blue colors.

Oh, God. Was he serious? He wasn't, right? No, this was Alfred. He was deadly serious.

"You dumbass!"

This was going to be so much fun. Greta had decided to skip the first race, reasoning that a lot more people would be there, and it would be much too crowded for even a little girl and her puppy to squeeze into. The stadium was still pretty full during the second race, but she was able to spot a spot next to Millie.

"Hi Ms. Millie!" she chirped. "Oh, and hello, Meg!" She waved a little to the cooing creature on the woman's lap before settling down in the seat next to her. Vincent set his head on his owner's lap, a little tired from fighting the crowds getting in. But his interest was perked immediately when a cat-like creature streaked past, following its own owner. He started barking loudly. Greta squeaked and tried to cover his mouth.

"Isn't that Mr. Kirkland?"

"Lieutenant Kirkland? What's wrong?"

Why was he getting mad at one of the pilots?

Although he would never, ever, EVER admit it, Raidou had deliberately changed his routine patrol with someone else in order to roam around during the races. The boy detective looked on, with awe, as the pilots prepared themselves, and caught, of course, the familiar figure of Kyouya Hibari just before the man hopped into the cockpit of his plane.

Theirs was an interesting story, but not one Raidou would tell to just anyone. Nonetheless, the boy smiled, and quietly offered a prayer for luck in the other's favor. He then continued roaming, occasionally stopping to see how the race was coming along.

Originally, Naoto had just planned to watch the second race. But at the last minute, she decided to watch both the first and second qualifying races. After getting herself a canteen of water, she headed down towards the race course, hoping to find a good spot before they were all gone. It would do Naoto no good to get stuck behind too many people. As much as she hated to admit it, she was a bit vertically challenged.

It was by chance that she spotted the familiar figure of her cousin among all the other spectators. It seemed like they were running into each other a lot lately. Not that she minded, of course.

"Raidou-kun!" She called, making her way towards him.

Raidou turned immediately at the sound of Naoto's voice, and smiled, meeting her halfway.

"Hello again. Enjoying yourself?"

Naoto nodded. Ever since she was a child, she had adored things like airships and planes. Coming to see the races was more exciting for her than most people would have guessed.

"I am. I see that you are as well."

How dare they deny von Karma entry to the VIP bleachers! ...well, it wasn't like he'd contributed anything personally, but still, he was extremely important. Still, he reasoned, they probably weren't good enough for him, so it really wasn't worth making a big fuss about it.

So, he sat in the bleachers, still quietly fuming, although... not as much as he could be.

Only the beginning of the race and there were already so many people watching, waiting. Chrome would have liked to think that she came in early enough, but looking through the bleachers, it seemed as though everyone thought so as well. Not that she would complain - she never did. She merely looked around to see if there were any empty seats.

Well, she saw one, and in addition to the empty seat was an old grumpy man beside it. She recognized him immediately - who would not? - but didn't make a fuss. Besides, she only wanted to see the race.

She walked up to him and asked, "Would it be all right if I take this seat, sir?"

Ah, what a nice day for a race! Now, these sorts of things usually weren't Miyo's thing, but she had received a tip off from one of the cabin boys that a certain captain would be attending. What a good little boy he was! In return, she had given him a "get out of a check up free" card. They were so easy at that age, weren't they? If asked, she would decline to comment on the fact that no one seemed to want her check ups ( ... )

...ah. Who was this girl? Well... never mind. Hopefully she was just here to see the races, so she probably wouldn't bother him. If not, he could make her leave.

"As long as you're quiet about it," said von Karma, looking over the planes. The only racer from the Victoria II that he knew of was de Alkirk, which... well. von Karma didn't entirely dislike de Alkirk, but he didn't know how good he was with a plane. Still, if he proved incompetent, there was always Lombardi...

His thoughts were interrupted by an entirely unwelcome presence.

"What are you doing here!?" snarled von Karma as he turned towards Takano. "Ge-no, I don't!"
