Dimo gazed indecisively at a display of throwing knives, trying to pick out a set. It was always good to have back-ups, just in case. But so far, these all looked improperly balanced. He growled a little under his breath. Couldn't anybody make good knives these days? He'd found some at the Boston Market, but those had been for Anthy. Now that he was looking for himself, it seemed that the selection was sparse, indeed.

Someone had told Zack earlier that there were some leatherwork shops in this direction and so he'd headed over here. He still wanted his gloves, and maybe a new belt as well, but right now Zack was being thoroughly distracted by the racks of weapons on display.

He'll never give up his Buster sword, but he did appreciate other types of weapons.

And ooh, there were throwing knifes. Very shiny throwing knives.

Looked as though some of the rest of the crew was out window shopping for new weapons, too. Dimo and Zack's paths hadn't really crossed much in the past, but he was curious to meet anyone who carried that impressive of a sword with him. Given the rest of his crewmates' abilities, Dimo had no doubt that the young man could use it, and use it well.

Dimo glanced over his shoulder and met Zack's gaze with his own yellow-eyed one. "If hyu's looking for knives, dere's probably better booths along down de vay. Dese vuns iz zo off-balance, iz not even fonny."

Zack laughed and shifted the weight of the buster sword on his back. "I'm more looking than anything else. I've already got this huge thing after all." He gestured at the buster sword with one hand. "I like looking though, even if I'm not the best at throwing knives around."

He gave Dimo a friendly smile. "You definitely know more about knives than I do. Swords are more my area of expertise."

Raidou was not ACTUALLY shopping, of course - as he was in charge of security, he had taken it upon himself to roam around at every opportunity. That, of course, included going to the marketplace.

The boy detective thus made his way through the crowd, looking totally out of place in his heavy-seeming black cloak and black (stylish!) hat. Some may have wondered why he did not seem uncomfortable at all, especially since they could not see or hear the fact that an ice demon was perched on his shoulders, generating cool air, hee-hooing as Raidou went along.

By this time Zack had found what was to him the absolutely perfect gloves. The were the right size, the leather was soft and smooth, and they were a nice dark brown that matched his belt. Catching the eye of the shopkeeper, they began to haggle over the price.

Zack loved haggling. But unfortunately, he tended to get so into it that he would start shouting and waving his arms, which soon attracted a crowd.

...And suffice to say, Raidou had never seen anyone haggle the way that man was haggling now.

Or, more accurately, he had never seen anyone haggle before, period. The boy detective paused, blinking, in surprise, at what was happening at one of the stalls. Jack Frost was equally interested - it showed, in how the little ice demon was generating even more obvious cold waves around them both.

Nobody ever haggled quite like Zack did, and both he and the shopkeeper got progressively louder and more passionate until they agreed on a price. The crowd around them clapped enthusiastically when they were done and Zack and the shopkeeper sealed the their deal with a firm handshake.

As soon as money and goods exchanged hands, Zack put on his new gloves happily, bouncing a little in place. He blinked a little as he felt a cool wind blow his wave but otherwise ignored it for examining the fit of his new gloves on his hands.

Hughes had been running around trying to get some shopping done all morning. His crew was busy with practicing the play and the cheers -- Hughes, who was mostly useless at those things, instead opted to get a list of things that everyone needed and made his way though the market.

Ribbons, some cloth, needles and thread, glue, stuff for welding -- the list was pretty much a great big pile of oddity, and he had had a rough time of it, trying to get everything together. Still! He had reached nearly the end of the list and between the bundle under his arms, strapped to his back, and slung over is shoulder, he was hopeful he'd be done by lunch.

Only, there was a hitch: "BUT WHERE DO YOU FIND GREEN LEATHER SHOES?" he wailed at the next item.

Zack in the meantime, was digging through a pile of shirts in a stall a few feet away, trying to find one that won't clash too badly with the pants he'd picked out earlier. He already found a nice one that he might just give to Cloud later and was now on the lookout for a few more choices for himself.

Hearing the question, Zack poked his head up from the pile and blinked in Hughes' direction. Green leather shoes? Why would anyone want to wear green shoes? But Zack was a nice guy so he hollered back, "The leatherwork shops is in that direction." Here he gestured in the approximate direction. "You might have try your luck there."

Well. He hadn't expected anyone to offer him any assistance, no matter how small. Instead of thanking help when he got it, though, the boatswain threw up his hands in despair and melodramatically gave a dismayed cry. "Leatherworks! But they'd have to make it! I need something fast and cheap..."

Maybe that was going too far. Rubbing the stubble on his chin, he gave the street a thoughtful look and inclined his head. "Where did you say it was again?"

Zack shrugged at Hughes' melodramatics. He still didn't get what the guy was so worked up about. "They've always got a few ready pairs of shoes made, I'm sure they could tint it green or something there."

He gestured again in the approximate direction. "That way. I was there earlier and there's a couple stalls of shoemakers."

Time off the Fiertia meant time away from her responsibilities: or at least, enough distance to pretend, if only for a little while, that the cages and ties that bound her were no more weighty than the ruffles of lace draped over her wrist. When she was on the ship Uni made an effort to wear nothing that would have made her stand out, but slipping away from its crew -- in particular, the loud quartermaster who insisted on "guarding" her (why?), the keen red eyes that belonged to a man who was surely more than a mere butler, and that ever-confusing conundrum known as the captain (he...) -- meant discouraging instant recognition, and so she had donned the rich satin and pristine silk she used to wear in Bellcius with an emotion akin to relief.

She steadfastly refused to think of what wearing that meant. Not a doll or plaything, she thought ( ... )

Zack turned away from a stall, sighing a bit in disappointment. This shop didn't have it either and this was the 5th stall he'd stopped at. He still haven't found that sword polish he'd been looking for all this time. Maybe he'll have better luck at Boston, if the 4223 ever stop by there.

Then out of the corner of his eye, Zack spotted something that made him really smile. A pretty girl dressed in the style of the noblewoman in Bellcius that he used to see often whenever he was stationed in there back in the days when he was still part of Ivona's military.

Still something seemed to be missing...

Aha. A smile! A pretty girl like her should be smiling, especially in a festive environment like this. Thinking quickly, Zack quickly bought a bouquet of daisies from a nearby flowergirl and hopped in front of Uni.

"Flowers for your thoughts?" He offered, holding out the bunch of daisies towards Uni.

skdlfhsaf Why so cute, Zack? (also look, I have an icon exactly for this) onlyluminous June 21 2009, 07:42:44 UTC
Uni blinked and-- stopped walking, settling into stillness. To say she did not expect this was an understatement (she'd never seen the man before in her life) and the only thing that kept her from flinching was the painfully exquisite courtesy that had been drilled into her along with unnatural calm. It was this calm she drew around her now as she looked up at the man.

Her gaze, surprised as she was, did not seem cold. He did not seem like the sort who intended her harm, and the sight of the flowers warmed her. Daisies, for innocence, purity, the uncomplicated life.

Besides, Uni had long discarded the old warnings about never speaking to strangers. If one was to be entirely honest, almost everyone she knew was a stranger.

"I do not know if my thoughts are worth anything," she said simply. "But you are very kind, sir."

Zack had never seen Uni before either, but he really meant no harm. All he wanted to do was to get her to smile, even just for a few minutes instead of looking so morose. It was a beautiful day, and people should be happy! Besides, she brought back some of his old rare happy memories of Ivona.

She hasn't slapped him for startling her. That was a good thing, and so Zack continued. "I"m sure they're worth quite a lot, much more than mine at any rate! But I'll also take smiles too!"

"Zack! Zack! Wait up!"

Hurtling up from behind, Cloud jogged up quickly and called out to Zack; his friend had a big head-start on him, and it seemed at first that Cloud wouldn't be able to catch up. Has he always been this eager to get where he wants to go? he wondered.

Putting on a little extra speed, he managed to gain ground until his voice could reach Zack from up ahead.

It was a good thing Cloud found him before he got any further into the crowd or else they'd never be able to meet up. Zack was just about to disappear into one of the side streets when he heard a familiar voice call his name.

Turning his head back, Zack's face lit up in bright grin when he saw it was Cloud that calling his name.

"Hey Cloud!" He shouted back cheerfully, waving one hand manically over his head in his friend's direction.

Whew! Having just managed to cut off Zack before he could escape, Cloud could be seen smiling thankfully as he grew a little closer. Surprisingly, he actually looked a little bit tired from the run, his features pleased but beleaguered, but considering the speed he had pushed himself through to catch up, it was hardly surprising. At one point, Cloud had even been forced to leap from the streets in order to avoid the choking mass of people crowding each and every turn and instead jump from rooftop to rooftop ( ... )

Zack waited semi-impatiently as Cloud caught up, bouncing a little from one feet to another. He knew it'd take a while for Cloud to make his way through to him with mass of people moving through this section of the makeshift town. And when Cloud finally stopped in front of him, Zack wasn't surprised to see Cloud panting a little. It was a hot day after all and the crowds just made it feel even hotter.

Reaching out with one arm, Zack pulled Cloud into a loose half hug, and began tugging him into the direction of the shops again. "Not at all! I'd never say no to spending more buddy time with you." He had missed Cloud. It was surprising that even working together on the same ship, they didn't spend as much time together as Zack wanted to. They were both busy of course with their own duties, but now he wanted to make up for that lost time.

"Anything in particular you're looking for?"
