Hughes had been running around trying to get some shopping done all morning. His crew was busy with practicing the play and the cheers -- Hughes, who was mostly useless at those things, instead opted to get a list of things that everyone needed and made his way though the market.

Ribbons, some cloth, needles and thread, glue, stuff for welding -- the list was pretty much a great big pile of oddity, and he had had a rough time of it, trying to get everything together. Still! He had reached nearly the end of the list and between the bundle under his arms, strapped to his back, and slung over is shoulder, he was hopeful he'd be done by lunch.

Only, there was a hitch: "BUT WHERE DO YOU FIND GREEN LEATHER SHOES?" he wailed at the next item.

Zack in the meantime, was digging through a pile of shirts in a stall a few feet away, trying to find one that won't clash too badly with the pants he'd picked out earlier. He already found a nice one that he might just give to Cloud later and was now on the lookout for a few more choices for himself.

Hearing the question, Zack poked his head up from the pile and blinked in Hughes' direction. Green leather shoes? Why would anyone want to wear green shoes? But Zack was a nice guy so he hollered back, "The leatherwork shops is in that direction." Here he gestured in the approximate direction. "You might have try your luck there."

Well. He hadn't expected anyone to offer him any assistance, no matter how small. Instead of thanking help when he got it, though, the boatswain threw up his hands in despair and melodramatically gave a dismayed cry. "Leatherworks! But they'd have to make it! I need something fast and cheap..."

Maybe that was going too far. Rubbing the stubble on his chin, he gave the street a thoughtful look and inclined his head. "Where did you say it was again?"

Zack shrugged at Hughes' melodramatics. He still didn't get what the guy was so worked up about. "They've always got a few ready pairs of shoes made, I'm sure they could tint it green or something there."

He gestured again in the approximate direction. "That way. I was there earlier and there's a couple stalls of shoemakers."

"What would Faithful Felix be without green shoes," he grumbled, referring to one of the cast members of the upcoming Steel Samurai play.

Well, what a helpful guy. Wasn't he from that 4423 ship or something? Hughes vaguely remembered him on the other ship's deck when they were still at Bydan. "You're that guy from 4423, right? Maes Hughes, Winding Way! Anyway, I guess I'll go see it, then. Thanks!"

"Huh?" Was Zack's response to Hughes' first comment. He had no idea what Hughes was talking about since he never really paid all that much attention to plays and music and whatnot. He might enjoy one if he was in the vicinity, but it wasn't something that came to mind very much.

"Oh yeah. Nice to meet you. I'm Zack fair!" He responded. "You've got a pretty good eye and memory if you remember from just one look."

Hughes was just about to run off when Zack threw the comment his way, and he remained jogging in place.

Did he just give away his less innocent skills? Probably not. "I don't forget a face I see!" he grinned, jogging, jogging. "I'm Maes Hughes, one of the boatswains over there. What do you do in the 4423?"

Zack wondered just how much energy Hughes had, jogging in place like that without getting tired, and momentarily forgetting that he himself was the fidgety sort that tended to do squats.

"Me? I'm just a lowly radio operator!" He said cheerfully.

Hughes was tireless! After all, he was a dad with a goal!

"Radio operators are awesome," Hughes informed him cheerily, still jogging. "They get all sorts of things done!" Like letting him contact his beloved wife as often as he could! And being table to talk to his lovely daughter!

Zack stared at Hughes' feet, seemingly fascinated by their movement. Up. Down. Up. Down. On and on it went.

"I knew that!" He declared affirmatively. "Boatswain are awesome too! They do err..." Actually he had no idea what boatswain did. "Err...lots of important stuff!"

On his part, Hughes completely didn't notice Zack's attention to his feet. Hughes was a man of energy and sometimes, admittedly, limited attention spans. Right now, though, his attention was on the pirate -- because what else could the man be, if he were in a pirate ship?

"Yeah, like be the daddy to the ten thousand kids in the Way!" he affirmed, mostly pulling Zack's leg and sort of not. Being a boatswain was a full time job! Or was it just in the Way?

It to quite a bit of effort for Zack to drag his attention from Hughes feet and to the man's face. He would have sworn that movement was somehow hypnotic.

And if Zack knew what Hughes was thinking, he would have protested that he wasn't a pirate. At least not yet. He hasn't done anything to be called a pirate. He had helped store lightning, fight off attacking cactaurs, and did his job as a radio operator of an airship. Yup. Nothing piratey at all.

"Daddy?" Zack eyed the man and asked a bit disbelievingly.

Hughes was finally noticing Zack's fixation, but otherwise did not do anything to stop his movements.

"Yeah, daddy! You have no idea how many kids there are in that ship," he declared with some hint of whining in his voice. "I mean, I love kids, but the ratio of adults to kids there is amazing. Did you know? The average age of our doctors is fifteen."

Zack firmly kept his gaze above the waist. He didn't want to get sucked into that hypnotic thing Hughes was doing again.

"Huh, that does sound really young." Zack laughed. "Maybe you guys should start advertising or something for more adults to join up."

If Hughes started flapping his arms, would Zack be hypnotized? He considered the thought.

"Maybe," Hughes nodded, although it wasn't noticeable with all the jogging going on. "But adults are more likely to get into trouble, too. I guess it has its ups and downs."

Hughes was still jogging. Wow. Zack's very impressed.

"But adults can take care of themselves, so you won't have to do so much or worry so much!" Zack answered cheerily. Even as a kid he was fairly Independent, and didn't like having his parents fuss over where he was and what had he been doing. "And if there are kids joining your ship, then they could take care of themselves too."
