Another Windows 8 Post

Since it's been about a month since my last post, it's starting to get buried and I've started noticing new posts from desperate Simmers trying to install the game under the new OS, so I figured I'd post an update and lend a helping hand ( Read more... )

I wouldn't necessarily count it out just because of that. I haven't had a problem under Win7 64-bit.

AlfredAskew made a post on GoS and she got things running under Win8 64-bit, though she used the Deluxe Edition and it sounds like there may be some uncertainty about patching an original base game under Win8.

Just sounds like there's going to be a lot of futzing around with compatibility modes. :/

Eesh. That's...odd. My experience with true incompatibility is that stuff straight-up doesn't work. I'd make sure everything possibly involved in running the game from the game itself to, like, your graphics card utility were allowed to do anything they want under UAC.

This thread at MTS has some more discussion, which may give you some more ideas to try. There's also mention of a utility called Grumpy Loader that might enable you to get those patches installed.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, maybe someone else can help out. (Don't have the OS to experiment on and, to be honest, I'd probably skip 8 like I skipped Vista. I have a standard license 8 I could migrate to another system if I upgraded.)

I just wanted to mention that 64 bit shouldn't really hurt anything. They even made a 64 bit XP, it's not exactly a new sort of OS architecture, even if the game was made for 32 bit systems originally. I didn't have any issue installing under 7, but I'd already went and told UAC to sit down and shut up.

Huh?? I'm not sure why you're saying here and in the other post that TS2 cannot run on 64-bit systems, because that's not true. I use 64-bit Vista and I can run TS2 as-is, no compatibility mode needed, probably due to the base game CD/DVD patch. Windows 7 and 8 64-bit is another story with all the hoops you have to jump through to get the game to work, but TS2 is almost ten years old now; you have to do tons of annoying work to get any old game to run on a newer OS. It's a pain in the ass to get TS2 to run on 64-bit Windows 7 and 8, but it's possible.

As for MTS, the only official statement I've ever seen them give about playing TS2 on Windows 8 is this: either don't bother, or run it on a virtual machine. Compatibility mode (both on x64 and x32 systems) has had spotty success for a lot of people so that could be why they weren't giving you the benefit of the doubt, but I don't think they were saying that TS2 on Windows 8 is impossible.

I heard that 64-bit didn't work with TS2, but I stand corrected. Please let us know how you got it to work ( ... )

I would like to emphasize that this is not the place to harp on a vendetta against MTS. Different site, different moderation, different rules, etc. You're free to your own opinion and all, but please don't let it distract from the information and discussion here! :)

I would not have mentioned them on this site except that they began to copy things off this site without my permission; in fact, strictly against my wishes, and there is no way on here for me to report it. I'll gladly delete my comments about MTS if there is a way for me to report the copyright infringement of the other website.

I'm stating on the record I did not want anything I posted on LiveJournal reposted on modthesims.info. I was very clear in my post on that website. The person on that site expressly copied and pasted parts of my blogs onto that site without my permission.

IIRC, install order is a non-issue for the X-pacs. It's been a while so something may have changed.
