She let her arm fall back slowly to her side, watching as he thought. He was genuinely trying to remember her, what with his eyes closed and squinting with deep concentration. She didn't blame him if he didn't; if she had been in his situation, she wouldn’t remember her, either! She waited for him to say something else, planning on asking her name, when he asked her a question that nearly knocked the wind out of her.

'Are you knowing girl is name 'Naminé'?'

"Naminé? How do you-"

A rush of thoughts and memories collapsed onto her. She knew Naminé only briefly, but deep down, she knew her best. Naminé was her. Could he have met her before they merged, when she was on Destiny Islands, or perhaps The World That Never Was? There was so much time between when she lost her heart and when she found Naminé, it seemed, that he could have met her anywhere and anytime. Or could they have met some other way? Could she ( ... )

Machi's expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed slightly as she reacted with shock--not a malicious or suspicious response, despite appearances, but a thoughtful one. Then he averted his eyes, looking away at the spot where the wall met the floor, a small frown creasing the very edges of his mouth--it was was an almost imperceptible expression, and completely useless as far as diving his actual meaning went. How did she know Naminé...? Siblings did not have voices so similar, not usually, and they did not look so alike and so different. Was he still just crazy? He did not have nearly enough vocabulary to tell the lie he wanted... or even to tell the truth. Instead he said something else, his voice flat and strained.

"...you sounding like, a little."

It wasn't the best he could do, but it was the best he planned on doing.

"How do you know her?" She repeated, pressing. It wasn't quite a demand, but it was bordering onto one. She shouldn’t be freaking out - she really shouldn't. But if Naminé was here, somehow, then . . .

Then she might be able to help her.

She shook her head briefly, not wanting to act rude. Either the boy was evading the question or simply could not answer it. She'd have to try something else. Something she thought could be impossible . . . but maybe not so impossible, after all.

"Is she here?" Her voice was nicer now, back to its usual chimes. But she still needed to know.

He flinched, reflexively--it entirely involuntary, but if he caught himself, he didn't show it, crossing his arms in front of his chest silently. It wasn't a question he could answer, there wasn't enough vocabulary, enough meaning--Naminé was a subject for which he had no words. He nodded slowly at the second question, though, then he looked away, averting his eyes further to glance at the back wall ( ... )
