This is a quoted section out of one of my sister (minuetcat)'s entries. I'm certain she won't mind, and if she does then we can duke it out when she visits tomorrow ( Read more... )

because it requires actual thinking to make a reply that'll seem good enough. You know, the thoughtful posts are the ones that scare folk because they think it'll make them look dumb or unsympathetic.

See? That's a much nicer reason than laziness

I think I totally missed the Deanna Troi post :P

Sometimes when someone writes something particurally personal I feel like I'll say the wrong thing or, I dunno, be an intruder. I usually do respond to more personal posts when I can. I'd much rather read that kinda stuff than the fluff.

As the previous comments say: I think one contributes when one feels one has something to contribute. When the topic of the moment is 'let's all be idiots together', well, the barrier to entry is lower. I don't even need coffee to play at being an idiot :).

...And there's less chance of a wrong reply to a wrong post ;).

um i'm just commenting so i'm not one of those people that don't comment on thought-provoking entries.... though i'm not really putting any effort or thought into this, because i am only reading my lj friends list to procrastinate housework and being productive, and goddamnit it would be productive to think thoughts and type them out in fancy words so that crystal doesn't hit me with large spoons and hippopotami.

What better way to say you don't care than to leave a comment actually stating that you aren't putting any effort or thought into said comment? ;)

I know... I'm guilty of this too...
I read it... then I just don't know what to say... I don't want to say something lame... so I try to think about something really meaningful to reply with... and then I forget and the post is burried under all the new ones.
I know, it's no excuse... but it's true.
