Bella couldn’t run fast enough. Her truck had broken down in the middle of the road, so she ran the rest of the way. She nearly cried with relief that his car was there in his driveway.
She tripped on the way to the stairs, then she ripped her dress on some loose wood on the steps. She all but fell on the porch. She banged her fist against the door. “Jake! Jake, please! I made a mistake! I choose you! Please let me in!”
She sank to her knees, sobbing with all she had.
Then the door opened.

"You don't want to hear the things I have to say, Bella." She wasn't sure how he meant it.
"Jake, if we could just-"
"Some things you can't take back."
"I thought I could love you. I didn't mean to lie."
"I'll be okay." But she knew better.

Bella walked along the beach, her hands in the pockets of her hoodie. She hadn’t felt this empty since Edward left her after the incident with Jasper. She did the leaving this time. She just couldn’t marry him. After a fitful night of sleep, she found herself driving to La Push just to walk by the beach.
“Bella?”
It was him. She felt the tears before she knew she was crying. Then she felt his warm fingers brushing the tears away.
“It’s okay,” he said, pulling her into a tight hug.
And they walked down the beach in silence.

They're stargazing in a small clearing in the woods behind Bella's house, passing a bottle of rez moonshine disguised as Jim Beam (Quil's doing, no doubt, though Jake and Bella are oblivious) back and forth between them for no reason other than to live a little.
With his inhibitions weakening, Jacob trails a warm hand down her side, lingering at her hip and tracing circles where her shirt has risen to reveal her milky-white skin.
"Jacob," she warns, her tongue thick from the whiskey.
He just shrugs, fingers still trailing, and mutters "...tick season. Jus' checking."
Bella doesn't stop him.
