Your thoughts, please

I just sent off a pretty argumentative response to a rude PM I received, and I'm looking for some validation on a few fanfic topics ( Read more... )

1. An author isn't obligated to do much of anything, but many fanfic sites suggest or even require that a warning be listed for character death, so in that sense, readers have come to expect it ( ... )

Why can't it be romance and tragedy?

An EXCELLENT question.

And a big fat 'yes' to your #4.

1. Not so much a obligation but maybe a little hint of a emotional roller coaster because I think character deaths in stories, especially in the beginning (even with warning) can turn people off ( ... )

You can't do a romance/tragedy label?

You can. But there are some...people...who think that tragedies shouldn't be labeled as romances. Which I think is ridiculous. If a fic is labeled
romance/mystery, a character death shouldn't automatically make it a tragedy instead.

If it's say Jacob, I'm probably not going to read further when it's beyond clear he isn't coming back.

Even there was only a chapter and an epilogue left? *cough*

I totes agree with #4. If you're going to label a story as an E/B or a J/B story, then you should stick with it.

Yes, this was helpful. Thank you. :)

I absolutely think you can, especially if you send the whole story developing a relationship between the characters. Death is NATURAL. It happens when it's 'time', it happens when it isn't.

See, that's a hard bargain but if I was emotionally invested in it, then absolutely I would finish it. Especially as you said, it was the very end.

I understand someone wanting to throw a twist in there BUT it seems like people do it because the JB fans weren't giving them enough reviews so they went the EB route.

Okay, good to know. Cause I felt like I was rambling there. LOL. You're welcome. :)

What a terrible thing to do. D:

When it comes to #4 and a site dedicated to a particular pairing, there should be at least a forewarning if the couple end up with anyone but each other, and if there's a love triangle in the canon, I don't think the alternate end of the triangle should be allowed at all.

I've read a couple of stories that ended with E/B at SOB and wound up severely pissed-off at both the writer and the mods, particularly since the authors didn't even limit themselves to something brief, but allowed readers to invest their time and emotions only to screw them over in the end.

Yeah, on sites dedicated to a certain pairing, you should follow the posting rules.

But like here on TATS, a story doesn't have to be J/B. Jacob and Bella just need to be the primary characters and must be exhibiting some sort of relationship. They can be paired with with other people as long as the focus of the story is the Jacob and Bella relationship. I don't think many stories like that exist, but if they did I don't think I'd be too upset about getting invested. I think there's more to Bella and Jacob's relationship than just romance, which is why I think it's so strong.

#1. Dear God, no. Why would I want it spoiled? Also, as an author, I wouldn't want any reader telling me what I had to "warn" them of.
#2. No. Is A Walk to Remember not a romance cause someone dies? I think not.
#3. I don't think so. The whole point of reading is to read, not stop when something doesn't go your (the reader's) way.
#4. Not necessarily, except maybe in a specified place like this. We're a Jacob/Bella fic community, so the general idea is that fic here should, if not end with them together, at least focus mainly on their relationship/general dynamic. In my opinion, anyway.

THIS.

OMG. A Walk to Remember was the FIRST story that came to my mind when this topic was raised. You must have the other half of my brain.

Obviously.
Seriously, though, so ridiculous. Was it just one person you had these issues with?

1. I prefer NOT to know. Because the weirdo I am, after reading the note, is looking through the chapter to know who is dead (obviously without reading the chapter) then I say "oh no!", I'm grumbling something like "should have not read ahead blablabla" and I'd read the chapter a week later because I'm too upset about myself.

2. IDK. I think it can be both. I'm not sure I'm paying too much attention to the label.

3. See comments above :) I'd say that it depends if the story still has a sense without this main character , if the plot is still "strong".

4. Again, see comments above :D . Just not Bella hooking up all the boys of Forks Highschool and Lapush plz.

I rarely ever look at the genre before starting a fic. And I didn't realize other people took that bit so seriously before today.
