As you might have heard if you're involved in LJ Idol, tinhuviel (season one winner) is in hospital at the moment.  I was planning on sending over some flowers and then a friend pointed out that it might be nicer if there was a more collective effort so that when she's feeling a bit better, she'll have something more permanent as a reminder that she is

I can't donate, but as someone very familiar with medicine, it's not typically a great idea to send flowers to folks who are in the ICU. Even if Tin isn't immunocompromised (which after some digging is I believe the case), it's safer for the other patients in that unit to not have flowers sent. Many ICUs won't even accept them for patients because of the potential allergen issues since many people are on vents and whatnot.

I wasn't planning on sending ANYTHING until she's out of ICU :) That should also give plenty of people time to send something if they want to.

Oh awesome :) I just wanted to point that out, in case you were unaware of the flowers-and-ICU thing. It always makes me sad seeing folks try to send stuff like that to an ICU, only for the patient to never get it.

I think something else that would help is for some of the extra money (maybe Gary can do a proper in-body-of-GR-text post tomorrow, really get this signal-boosted?) to be put straight towards her medical bills, in addition to being able to get books she'd like to read? I see she's having a hard time lately getting to buy groceries and whatnot, let alone cover medical costs, and this is going to be an extremely expensive stay.

I think Gary is going to do a post tomorrow pointing people here. I guess it really depends on how much money I raise what can be done with it - the point behind the Kindle is that it's relatively inexpensive, something she wouldn't buy for herself and something that will last a long time. The kind of money that would buy that isn't really going to make much of a difference to medical bills (and I'm in the UK, so I really don't have any idea on that front). But if people are really generous and there's lots of surplus, then I can just forward it to her to do with as she sees fit.

Hey, you really don't know me, and I don't really know either you or the person in question. Still, if she's somebody that means so much to so many people, then she must be pretty special.

I'm really in no financial position to donate money, but I'd really like to do something. I got a Kindle Fire for my birthday, and I found that it was much more useful whenever I converted it into an Android tablet. It wasn't easy and it took forever, but I'd be more than happy to walk anybody through the process.

Or, I don't know. I can write a whole bunch of pointless (but funny) stories. I can knit and crochet. Or, whatever else you need, I guess. Please let me know how I can help.

At the moment we definitely have enough for a basic Kindle. It would be fab if we raised enough for a Kindle Fire and if we do, I will most definitely ask you for a cheat sheet to talk her round the machine (especially since I am the world's biggest Luddite and wouldn't have a clue myself!).

Funny stories would also be lovely - do you need prompts or do you just want to write whatever tickles your fancy and email them to me? I'll forward them with your name (and email if you like). I think that's just as appreciated in hospital as presents. sales@fey-publishing.com

Whenever I converted my Kindle Fire to an Android tablet, I had absolutely no idea what the hell I was doing because I'm simply not one of those people. The whole process took a week between my boyfriend and I (who is one of those people), but this was in January, and it seemed that many of the people on the forum we visited were just beginning to crack the Fire. Somebody was going to write a program that did it all in one step. I haven't checked in a while, but I'm sure that somebody made progress on it because it's a community that takes rooting very seriously

Yeah, those first two paragraphs you wrote? Completely over my head! I have an actual tablet which I agreed to let my husband borrow (and I can't remember why) and he's done all sorts of things to it that were way beyond my skill so it's actually being used, whereas I only ever used mine as a calculator, because I can't find a calculator on Windows 8...

Thanks for all your suggestions - they're really helpful. I shall have a ponder and email over some prompts.
