Well, the house is starting to look like a third person might be living here shortly. The nursery is mostly together, and could in fact house a baby at this time. We've got a few finishing touches and a little bit of organizing to do and the custom-made glider/ottoman set arrives on Tuesday. I'll try to post pics sometime later this week, after ( Read more... )

Cats pose a miniscule danger to newborns (by way of accidentally suffocating them when trying to cuddle too close), but the old wives' tale about cats intentionally harming babies is totally false. About the worst a cat will do to a crib is pee on it, and will definitely get cat hair on it if you let him/her in the room. We keep our cat(s) completely out of our nursery, so problem solved there. :) If you give the cat a few days to scope out the nursery before the baby arrives, though, that will help out. Just don't let him/her get into the crib, or else s/he will think it owns the crib.

Later on the cat may give your baby a warning scratch or two when its tail gets pulled one too many times, but that's to be expected. :)

Luckily, our cat is more cuddly than agressive (unlike the cat that lives with a certain national officer :) ), and he doesn't go into the room when the we have the babygate across the door, which is funny because he could easily jump the darn thing.

Regarding my mother-in-law, she's just been harping about the animals a bit lately with the baby coming into the house, and this is just an example. Sometimes our families, particularly Andrea's parents and one of her sisters, don't seem to get it that the pets are part of the family and that we'd no sooner part with any of them than we would each other or the baby. But we understand each other, so that's the important thing.

Cats will steal the baby's breath! jessamine6 August 29 2005, 13:24:08 UTC
Haha, I had a good chuckle when I saw that Andrea's mom was all paranoid about the cat.

My cat is also great about not jumping over the baby gate. Like you, I totally don't get it why she doesn't just hop over it because she can. When I go to my parents' house, I normally stay in the basement so I baby gate the area off (no door) to limit her area of reign. Plus, the one time my mom opened the gate and didn't put it back on, we ended up spending the next two hours looking for the kitty.
