You know, I can understand there being controversy about whether one should raise government spending during or in the wake of a recession - but I find it inconceivable that anyone with more than a child's grasp of economics would actually consider lowering it - yet this exact policy has become the new orthodoxy. Who are these people, these advisors and experts who told politicians that the responsible thing to do in the wake of the biggest contraction since the 1930s was to start waffling about "austerity" and "belt tighetening
